Experiences Step 2 CK Exam Prep/Experience

First of all, I want to thank everyone for all their contributions to this website. It has been a tremendous help getting ready for step 1 and now step 2 CK.

Little bit about me: I took my step 1 last november, did a few rotations and then started studying for step 2 this April. I took the exam OCT 21st.

Total prep time: 6 months
Material used:
1st:
Kaplan Lecture notes (all except psychiatry.. used step 1 KLN behavioral lecture notes) and Kaplan videos.
- Must read in my opinion
> OB/GYN, Peds, Surgery

I also used MTB-2 and 3 along with the lecture notes (integrated notes into MTB)
Kaplan Q bank (subject wise/untimed)
- Q bank was long, some of the questions were asking for crazy minute details
- The explanations were not that great but good practice none the less
I did that Kaplan assessment exam after I finished my review (not the full length exam)

2nd:
MTB-2/3 over and over (referred back to KLN from time to time)
- I read all of MTB-2
- MTB-3: read all of it (Peds, OB/GYN, Surgery are a MUST READ!!!)
> Some important topics were left out in MTB-2 that are in MTB-3
> Neuro: Dementia, vertigo/dizziness
> Psychiatry: has much better explanations for treatment and management
-UWORLD: Random/Timed (I completed 95% of it).. VERY IMPORTANT!!
> MTB-2/3 pretty much covers all the topics that are tested in uworld.
> Seemed easier than kaplan qbank (questions are not as long)
I did NBME exams in-between to monitor my progress and did uworld assessment exam last (5 days before my exam)

Scores:
Kaplan QBank: 72%
Kaplan assessment exam: 81%
Uworld: 77%
NBME 2: 237 (1.5 months out)
NMBE 3: 227 (1 month out.. i don't know what the hell happened)
NBME 4: 252 (3 weeks out)
NBME 6: 260 (2 weeks out)
Uworld: 250 (5 days out)

Exam experience:
I definitely had mixed feeling during the exam, some of the questions were easy and short and some of them were very long..
TIME MANAGEMENT IS THE KEY!!!!! I def ran short of time in couple of blocks, still had like 5-6 questions left and had less than 1 min per question. I honestly panicked, at the end of some of those blocks. I pray that I didn't mess up too bad on those.

I hated the Abstracts, they were sooooo long. I always just marked those questions and guessed on the answers and left them for the last. It wasn't worth it to me to worry about 3 questions when I had 43 others I can use the time on. Unfortunately there were about 3 sets of those questions (in the entire exam.. so about 9 questions total).

Drug ads weren't too bad.

Know the correct order of doing things (Dx, management, tx..), it can get tricky when you have multiple answers that seems correct.

Last words:
1. MANAGE YOUR TIME PROPERLY!!!
2. KNOW CORRECT ORDER OF DOING THINGS
3. LOTS OF QUESTIONS ON PREVENTATIVE MED (screening test, vaccinations)
4. PRACTICE DOING RANDOM/TIMED QUESTIONS
5. DONT FREAK OUT IF YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME (LIKE ME)...THINK FASTER

I honestly don't know how I did on the exam, but I hope my experience can help someone else and prevent them from making the same mistakes.

Hello there,

Honestly I thought mtg-2/3 was enough for psychiatry.

For Peds, I liked KLN along with MTB-2/3. You might want to add the ENT and Neuro section from KLN, those were pretty high yield on the exam.

In my opinion, you should do IM from MTB-2 and COMBINE all the other topics from MTB-2 and 3. There are some topics missing for IM on MTB-2 that can be found in MTB-3 (i.e. Neuro: Dizziness and vertigo, dementia).

Do as many questions as possible in TIMED and RANDOM mode..

Good luck
