Unhappy Terrible Step 2 CK Experience Today

I just wrote my step 2 ck today and found it very difficult. For my prep I did:

Studied 3 months
Read MTB2 x4
Watched Kaplan Cardio lecs only
UWorld 1.5x: 60% (first time around) I was getting 70% on random blocks my second time
UWSA 1: 211 (3 weeks before exam)
Free 150 Q's" 80% (2 days before exam)

I know that I'm not the smartest, but I really thought I knew enough to do alright on this test. There were so many questions that asked "what is the next most appropriate step?" - which were hard for me. In my practice exams and uworld I remember a lot of "best initial test", "most accurate test", "best initial therapy," etc. So, there many questions where I just wasn't sure what the most appropriate next step was. A lot of the questions had twists on common scenarios that were different from what I was used to in the practice questions and that made me think twice about what the next most appropriate thing to do was.

I had drug-ads on 5 blocks (each time 2 questions and one time it had 3 questions); I always left drug ads till the end and usually i ended up rushing through them (most of them were actually easy and few were hard).

The majority of the time I had it down to two choices and just had to guess at the right one. My first 2 blocks, I rated as very hard. The rest of the blocks I thought were Medium, and one seemed easy. A few times, the block would start out easy (i would be confident in my answers for like the first 10 questions) and then all of a sudden get very difficult and I would be guessing between 2 choices.

There were some freebie questions obviously, including 2 questions i recognized that were almost same as from the Free 150 questions.

The test covered pretty much little bit of everything and asked some things in some very ingenious ways lol; I think maybe i went into this exam thinking it wouldn't be so bad and it turned out to be very bad.

All in all, I found the test very difficult; timing was OK; not that many long questions actually (I was expecting more long questions); It seemed much harder to me than the UWSA 1. Not trying to scare anyone, I think I just didn't prep well enough maybe; maybe I should've done more NBME practice tests.

So bummed out ... can anyone who's written the test recently relate to this experience? I keep reading bout how everyone aced it and thought it was easy ...

Default yea.

Took my exam today as well. And I kind of feel the same way. Was more difficult than I expected. I know God is in control though, so it is well.

I gave my ck at the end of Dec 13. And i felt pretty much the same way when i walked out of the prometric. I thought i was a goner. But got my result 2 days back and i scored 250. So i guess its normal to feel what you're feeling right now.
All the best.

I only seem to turn to God when I'm in trouble, I wonder if he keeps track of that

I see this trend a lot: ppl saying they found the exam tough and then get 250; i'm afraid I'm not in that category though, even my step 1 score was barely passing so I know that if I had trouble I actually will not do well

Well i can relate to you. Im taking my step 2 ck on wednesday. And I'm not one of the 250 guys. If i would get a score like that i would think someone is playing a joke on me. My nbme scores and UWSA are also sort of like 210-220. Hope you get a good score and wish me luck.!

Goodluck man, get good sleep, don't do much the day before, go in with confidence, take breaks between blocks, don't talk to overly friendly ppl (I really hate those ppl), and take snacks and monster/redbull

oh and don't let the proctor give you a pat down - they only supposed to use the metal detector on you. so, don't go letting anyone feel you up (those old ladies get bored)

Thanks. Will make sure the old lady doesn't take advantage of me :P... Today i took NBME 1 and got a 230. I know its old and not very predictive. I had taken the NBME 6 but without extended feedback and never corrected any of my answers, and in that one i got 212. Don't know if that should make me feel a little bit more confident or not to pay attention to it. What do you recommend for me to do these last days?

Do the free 150 questions if you haven't done that already, other than that I think your scores on the practice NBME are good; read over biostats and look at some high yield pictures on this forum - those are the things i did in my last 2/3 days

Honestly, I felt like the 150 questions were more like the real test than UWSA (I haven't done any NBME so i can't compare that one); i read some forums where ppl thought the 150 free questions were more closer to the real thing than even NBME (that's what made me want to do them); and lastly, i read that 75 - 85% is considered a good score on the free 150 questions and anything above 85% means you'll do really well on the real test.

I actually spoke to one of my friends who recently failed the step 2 ck (183) and he said he had gotten a 67% on the free 150 questions

the usmle step 2 ck score estimator predicts:
with 80% you get 214 +/- 16
with 85% you get 231 +/- 16

Well i posted a more lengthy response but i put a link to the usmle step 2ck score estimator and so it'll have to be approved by the moderator

basically, yes i think the 150 free questions are worth it ... i saw two extremely similar (if not the same) on the real thing and also they were more closer to the real test than the UWSA; if you search the forums you will find ppl who feel the same way.

if you have the time and can find them, then do them; but you have good scores on your nbme anyways so if you can't do them then don';t worry bout it

Just like you said. I found the test to be very hard. Not so long questions though, but very 50/50, having to guess questions. I marked like 20 questions or more per block, but really just had time to check like half, maybe less. As of now i don't remember anything about the test...just have that feeling of bitterness. I totally found the real thing a lot harder than NBME, UWSA or Uworld. But ill just have to wait for results (prob. the 19th).
Good luck for you and really hope you get a good score, although i would be more than happy to even just pass

Oh and my stats:

I did UWorld 2X: First pass around 65%, second time 75-80%.
NBME 4: 210 (1 month out)
NBME 6: 212 (2 week out)
UWSA: 200 (1 week out). Made a bunch of dumb mistakes. And i was also tired cause i didn't sleep well the night before and was sick :S. None the less I GOT SUPER scared.
Free 150%: 80% (the day before)
Step 2 CK: ???

And i wanted to add something. I had ALOT of questions that asked "What is the next best step IN DIAGNOSIS"...when you are reading fast you might just assume its the next best step PERIOD. It had me going crazy cause they interchanged them constantly and when i already had an answer i was like OH S***. and picked the next best dx, not the next best step in general.
Hope it helps someone.

I agree, I tripped up several times on questions like that too.

I went into the test expecting more questions like "What is the most accurate test?" or "What is the best initial step in treatment?"

But majority of questions asked "What is the most appropriate step?" which is hard, because usually the questions were tricky and you're not sure if it should be a test or treatment/management.

Sure. Its just a matter of being used to the questions...whats the next best step in diagnosis (test)....when you are reading fast, and I'm speaking for myself, i sometimes skip words to read faster so i got confused and just assumed that the question was asking me whats the next best step and my mind just skipped diagnosis and when to look for the answer. I linked the word diagnosis with the question Whats the most likely diagnosis...I don't know if you understand what i mean....it really has nothing to do with the test per se but with the way your mind might get used to one type of question asked in a certain way...

Exactly! Its basically a word game more than an actual test content knowledge if you know what we mean.

Not sure, I remember that I didn't get my Step 1 report until almost noon!

I just woke up - I was trying hard to stay asleep until like 9 am but oh well - 3 hours of freaking out will burn some calories.

I keep checking the OASIS trick to see if it will let me register for the step 2 again ... it keeps telling me "You've registered and sat for this step already ...." as opposed to "You've already passed, you can't register ..."; So either I failed or I think they haven't even updated OASIS yet.

Failed.

Got a score of 200. I feel like **** man. failed by 3 points...

I've been so depressed this past year and its been so hard to find the motivation to study for this **** at all... now i'll have to do it all over again...

wuts worse is that if this was just a couple months ago - it would have been considered a pass.

I told my parents I failed.
Mom: "Well, that's ok, you tried your best."
Dad: "How dare they fail you over 3 points! Order a recheck - find a way to get those 3 points!"

Even tho I'm upset I failed, I love my parents - always supportive no matter wut

Goodluck on your scores next week man, I pray you pass.

I will also pray that the ppl who design these exams and then decided to raise the passing score so high to get pancreatic cancer.

Yeah, thankfully our families are supportive. My dads a dentist and he sort of knows the struggle to study and pass a couple of tests...so he sort of relates.
I really just want to pass.... plus i need to take the CS still

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience.. Life is full of ups and downs. Take your time to adjust and see if you can pin point the weakness in your first prep. Hold your head high and be ready to correct the mistakes.

We don't like fails. no one likes it. but sometimes it builds perseverance, and it makes you to be more understanding of other people's failures/mistakes. And that is a valuable social skills that will help you a long way in life.. Take heart. God bless you.
