Default Tamta's Ck exam experience

Hello everybody,

I started CK preparation after 2 months of taking step1 (230)

Total prep timeó4 months
Intense (from 8 am- 12am)--- 2 months
Kaplan Q bank 61%
UW % 71 (1.5 times)

NBME 4ó221 (was not disappointed cause it assured me that I have managed to organize everything together and I really was able to go into exam)

NBME6--- 235 (seemed so easy, thought would get around 250 at least)

UWSA--- 248 (closest in feeling the real exam pressure, unpredictability, disappointment and feeling of failure while doing it save it for the last)

Free 150 day before exam did not count % but it was very useful especially for drug/adds part with similarity to real thing.

Exam in 10 days---

i started my first read with MTB2 + Kaplan bank subjectwise. didnot do explanations wanted to finished first read really quick to delve into serious study with uworld. although i would still recommend to do kaplan bank thoroughly it helps with time issue of questions a lot. it really scares you in the beginning so after that real exam qs are not so scary

i finished internal medicine started obgyn from kaplan notes+ MTB2+ MTB3+ kplan bank in same way just gave a look on correct answer. didnot delve into explanations. i finished other subjects in same manner and gave a read to internal medicine kaplan notes everything was real quick i was doing around 50 pages a day. or even 100. didnot do surgery form Kaplan. If you trust my experience: sip Kaplan notes except Ob Gyn, you could do Ped if its your weak subject. MTBs and Uworld cover everything. Until last days Iíve been reviewing both MTBS for OTHER SUBJECTS and i think this is must because you cannot skip EITHER of them.

in the beginning i thought it was impossible to bring MTB3 in MTB2 but in the end after couple of tries with each subject and after couple of reads of BOTH mtbs for other subjects i made it as one whole book.

SO i started UWORLD on second month of preparation, did my biggest mistake and took one month subscription., take at least 2 if you are not planning second time. meaning you shoudl without doubt take 3 months subscrtiption and do uworld on second round. did random, timed blocks and this is very important to do random, because it makes big difference when you read subject and do questions shortly after for those subject than when you have read something long ago. STICK with RANDOM and no subject will seem impossible.

I did 40 blocks of UW (50 blocks total) made one week review and took my first NBME 221
I finished uworld left over blocks and started review of MTB2 which i have not done very well during doing uworld, after finishing UW and most of subjects marked questions i took another NBME6 235. I booked exam date on prometric after a month and extended third subscription for uworldŗ until exam date.

I have had total 1000 marked qs, Iíve been doing questions with large explanations, lot of exhibits and media, charts like endocrine, ekgs etc. a lot of times . in the end I turned out to have completed 100 blocks of Uworld. ive been doing one block regularly for those 3 months and review of MTBs as much as i could.

last month i started DIT videos did it in 2 weeks exactly. and wrote UWSA got 248. 10 days before. Did not postpone exam
in the beginning i could hardly do review of IM and 2 subjects in a week in the end ive been reviewing 4-5 chapters in a day. after UWSA i did not do much just review of subjects and one block of explanations.

I was not burned out in last week just I started to take care of myself more and prepare myself physically.
I worked a lot on my sleep pattern. two days before I ve been waking up 7-8 and never taking any naps inn my life. trying to start sleep procces at 10. so day before I did free 150 in the morning until 1pm.

took a walk in the city, had some Japanese food, salads, bought a t-shirt in New Yorker, watched some light new year movie in theatre. came back had dinner started sleeping process at 9. and yes this is the worst moment in your life when your mind wonít let you sleep but everything depends on this night before sleep. I have suffered about 3 hours and probably fell asleep around 12:30. 11:40 was the last time I looked at clock on my iphone. I woke up three times: at 2am, 4 am and 6 am. I went back to sleep first two times and stood up at 6. it was same as night before step1. I was fresh. checked out of hotel had breakfast, have prepared food I would take to exam centre evening before. and went to test centre at 8:something.

Simple impression: i didnot find anything unexpectable there.
Only unexpectable thing was that i had ten minutes minimum after each block, even more if there were drug ad/abstract. Which was as i expected 10 qs total.

So expect four blocks with drug ad or abstract in it. And of course mark them!!! This is only true way to be able to complete exam. Otherwise u will screw up whole block and screw up add/ abstract 10 questions and screw up yourself and whole exam.

They were doable and were in exact same format as in Free 150. These blocks had lesser Q but only 42, and 43 not less unfortunately.but marking them saves lot of time.

its not the biostatistics that y can study anywhere, I am pretty good in biostats its my best subject and all I can recommend is know simple stuff be ready to answer NNT!!!

Probably 70% questions i made them. Others vague. Same concepts tested twice in consequtive blocks to confuse you. qs are normal length, some are enormous but believe me they maybe even better then small 50/50 or even 0 choice questions.
i should complain about psychyatry, when i start complaining about that it means its real pooh. and worst thing is Depression was the thing that gave me hard times, unbelievably hard to choose correct diagnosis

I recommend to take break after each block. This helps a lot. just even if you come out put cold water on your face and take some fuel, fluid, peace of chocolate. I forced myself to do it. I had trouble with break time management, after second block I donít know why it turned out that 17 minutes of my break time flew by. so i managed to finish last blocks earlier and used them as break time.

I was very calm and fast. Did not thought much about what i had no idea but tried to make good of those questions i could really make sense of. I donít belong to people who remember there questions or even how content of subjects were how much percents. I was rushing through questions with such unbelievable speed that I cant recall anything. I was totally outerbody. I did not have any head ache, one hypoxic episode in 6th block as on step1 just shook my had took eyes away from computer for some seconds and continued.

Internal peds interspersed, small amount of gyn, preventive, obs, surgery equally distributed.Of course excapt cardiac stuff, 2-3 ecgs( found them extremely annoying although I am cardio-weak ), 2-3 sounds (very doable), 2-3 immunodefs. No single step1 type q. Very little pharmacology, only Cardiac ones. Every surgery question starts with motor vehicle accident, be sure to differentiate hemo-, pneumo thoraces, shock stuff. to be honest I donít remember how lot there were X rays CTs, I donít even remember any load of Acid base questions. but of course Electrolytes made unbelievably tricky. ive been doing charts for electrolytes until last days and god know how many times I have reviewed them. and that helped on my UWSA and on exam also.

know those as your five fingers.

lot really a lot what is most likely diagnosis or what is cause of this blablabla thing going on meaning to choose diagnosis.
I was kind of lucky to have drug adds in the middle 4 blocks. So although last blocks were tough but i was relaxed and not rushing myself to death. But believe me guys y have to rash yourself, I am a fast reader and became even faster and furious during exam, so donít calm yourself on time issue.

in last block I caught myself on making terrible mistake, I did not recognize anything in question it was sequential so I moved on it asked me are you sure to lock question of course I was not sure so came back to question and oh god I would kill myself if I missed it, so got both those correct. so god know how many that easy and recognizable questions I have missed.

My advice:
I have not missed a day without doing anything!! After taking step1 exam! I advise you to do the same.
Plan more than you are able to do and you will at least do what y are able to do. Not less.

Do massive build of knowledge step by step, add things on each other, build up speed, build up stamina, accelerate yourself as much as you can. This exam is all about this. To bring yourself being in perfect shape to exam day. and donít forget medium level anxiety, not more, not less.

Step1 is your half way to CK. So use advantage of it.

I took all self assessments three weeks apart, save your assessments and plan them wisely donít spoil them cause they are not that many, and they will be your only support in weeks of waiting for score.

DECTIVATE FACEBOOK. TURN OF MOBILE PHONE. only check it when you are in toilet.

If you will be desperately devoted you will do it you will be in your best shape and show best of you on exam day. Nothing starts and ends with USMLE but this is our road this is our route to success, to better life, our lives are already better, we already are better physicians, students, residents, we are so much better than ourselves before. Even if our efforts will be worthless we should do everything from our side, and then let fortune take its toll.

what score you did not get always remember when starting this process you thought it would be miracle if you pass step1, step2 and yes it is success by itself being able to take this exam perform on it and survive it.

so yes any score is miracle for us, for self educated struggling with systems in our country, struggling with people around us and struggling with OURSELVES all the way through this process. This last one is the main war. Win over yourself.

I will be 8 years graduate by application time. Iíve been working in Hospital all these years. I know I can impress someone in real life, so I will try my best to do everything needed to get interviews and as I said before: I will do my best from my side, fortune will take its toll..

All the best

Warm regards from my beautiful country Georgia.

All the best wishes for success to friends on forum and to my closest and dearest friends, who helped me during this whole process and without whom I would never be able to make it:

BB, David, Marika and Nicholas

I am really devoted to you guys, with whole my heart!!

you will have 2 drug ad and 2 abstract questions totally maybe even five. so expect 4-5 blocks which will have either abstract or advertisement in it. mark those sequential questions while completing your block and try to answer them in the end of the block.

Default well done!

Hi Tamta, you have such an inspiring spirit. Splendid preparation, you deserve more than you expect. Mental discipline to keep the motivation and keep moving forward eveyday is hard for so many of us; you clearly articulated how we should go about it to reach success. Thank you. Great advice about the preparation, subjects, assessment tests and the exam, greatly appreciated. Thank you, will be waiting for you to tell us about your score. Good luck, you'll do great.

thank you for those words. it means a lot to me. especially that very good Doctor was killed yesterday in my town, in my neighborhood by a patient who threw explosive in his room, and i witnessed it while taking my kid out of kindergarten. that provoked my sub-clinical depression into a full blown sadness. but thanks god i am waiting for CK score. not am being somewhere in the beginning and contemplating why should i change my life and not be a doctor here in my country.

Hi tamta,
I have been following the january thread and you guys are so motivated, keep up the spirit. U r awesome!!

I am sure you will get your dream score. And thanks for the great write up.
I am terrible at managing time and i would like to know from how u planned study for everyday. When looking at the big picture as a whole step 2 ck looks scary.

Were you also working while preparing for exam? Would you like to tell me your everyday schedule? Was it flexible? How would you manage ur study if yoh couldnt finish the topics for the day?

Kindly help!!

I never had written plan. I have not been working I took of 4 months. i have had some problems in first month and 2-3 weeks in the other months of doing something else during the day.
so total 2 months were full blown study.
as i mentioned above my preparation was first quick read with kaplan qbank, and serious prep with uworld oe block each day. i was not able to read lot of MTB topics during doig Uworld. so i think main thing is to stop being scared with some unbelievable big picture. choose the main sources and dont bother yourself with thinking about every other available source there and stick with it. if you are starting i dont know maybe i would have tried first aid for CK once. but i cant recommend it i have not done it. this is additionally if you want.
otherwise start at least doing one normal sized chapter f MTB minimum. Cardio for example would take 2 days. dont miss a day. you will work out your own schedule depends on how much you can. i really have been doing a lot. now after 3 weeks of giving exam i think i dont remember anything although i had so much information in my head. so start at whatever speed you can build up knowledge and buildup your speed to have as much info in the head on exam day as possible. this exam is about acceleratino and building up everything on each other. i would recommend to spend all your days studying because you will be finished sooner. otherwise you will always have your mind worried that you are not able to dedicate whole day and study and cant do enough.

final tips:

I cannot tell anything new. I wrote my experience because this all is fading away from me.
I CAN Tell one thing for sure: after experiences of lot of my close and not so close friends, after watching nearly every wednesday on this forum for 6 months: it all is individual and it all depends on the EXAM DAY PERFORMANCE> my best friend who had self asessments always 5-7 point higher than me got 14 points lower then his UWSA. he has got great score!!!!! i saw it first before my score and i prepared my self to have something below <240.
it is funny that i am saying this that i ever dared to even think about getting something above 240, but it all came from self asessments.
this means only one thing that i can perform on exam as i do on any usual self asessment with MEDIUM LEVEL ANXIETY so that anxiety does not interfer with my performance. i can tell you guys for sure i have not done anything after UWSA i was just dragging myself forward. and i could not read any more time MTB or everything i read before.
so both my steps i got exact ONE in ONE score as my last self asessments.
another thing: it is hard to believe but believe those who have done exam that MTBs + UWORLD is enough!!!!! provided that you have recently done Step1. it is ENOUGH enough if both are well done and couple of times done. ive heard lot of times: MTB is not as good for step2 as FA for STEp1, well it turned out better for me cause i got 17 point higher on CK. cause i have learned from my mistake that i started first aid for step1 only 6 months before my exam. and now i started and stuck with MTB all the time.

i have strengths and weaknesses but i have worked a lot on my weak and terrible subjects i have listened to heart sounds so many times that im sure i got all of them on exam, i am also sure that i got none of ECGs and i had them as many on both steps.

except immunology i dont remember anything reminding me of STEP1 and btw i have low performance in it. questions although seemed weird and vague as any other i probably could not nail them.

I also have low performance in Gynecology. although it was not my weakness. so it doe snot matter to say work on our weaknesses we should work on our everything we can.
i have higher performance in preventive and nutritional digestive stuff. on everything else i have borderline no stars. im sure those weird psychiatry questions helped me a lot with my score. because i dont know i had some 6th sense coming to me in the end of reading this terrible questions and going with one very single but important clue. not caring that q stem really tried to seduce me on some other diagnosis.

so i hope i somehow satisfied your curiosity.

thanks for everyone for all the best wishes!!! Good luck to you all

I have opened my score with my friends and one of our indian friends he was laughing so much ive been shouting alhamdullilah all the time because thats what i have heard all the time on forum when someone gets unbelievable score and yes this was unbelievable for me. unbelievable. although i believed deep in my heart and yes i have to say funny thing: things that you dont even tell to yourself. i was so scared that mys elf asessments maybe are not true because seriously i have googled couple things while doing NBMEs thats why i wrote UWSA outside in library but even worse thing: i have done it together with my friend and we were asking each other some things in the end sorry this is real life.. and i have made couple of questions because of him right. but i also changed couple of my chosen right answers to incorrect ones

whatever this is over. and im so glad.
god bless everyone.

thanks tamta on sharing this and congrats on your great score , it is not just experience , it is actually a motivation ,
can you give us the time between each NBME and UWSA and your real exam

and also how did you prepare for abstract and drug adds , how did you study that , I have this problem that when i get the question i dont know what to start reading first and how to even understand it , i feel it needs 10 minutes for every question to read it and understand it and solve it

I am sorry just found your post.

There is no exact way how to prepare for Drug Adds, you must have some biostatistics HUNCH.

I did free 150 drug adds day before together with my friend we answered together and did some counseling before final answer and this helped a lot. You have to exclude of course and number one tip is to do them in the end of the block.

Pay attention to: intervention done, methods. to what kind of pts does study or drug add apply to. It may not even apply to the pt presented in the answer. Just make some BOLDLY Understandable sentenced clear for you. So you can than manipulate the answers with those clarified understandings. Be very comfortable with Basic statistics.

I have heard people go and read the abstracts of several studies to familiarize themselves what to pay attention to quickly and where to find what is needed for your question answer.

Lot of time has gone from my CK so this might not be very helpful. When I will start to prepare for STEP3 I will make a good post about DRUG adds. Cause definitely statistics helped me score high.

Naah. No way. Thanks to you. All the graduate moms will always be a great inspiration and it tells us that us students have no excuse at not performing well on these exams. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Best of wishes to you

By the way. Did you find Kaplan Qbank and DIT really useful. I mean, did they help you achieve that score?

Kaplan is really good to train you in timing of question answering. its content is not that valuable though. So i would just extremely quickly do it in timed mode and thats it.
DIT was not that glorious to be honest we had the feeling that we were waiting time while doing it but we did it in Two weeks me and my friend from last NBME to the last self assessment before exam UWSA and it raised both of our different scored with exact same 13 points.

Good luck to all of us. This is a tough road. But God sending you miraculous interviews when you were on the way to collapse mentally is really precious.
