Default Step 2 CK 3 Failed Attempts

I found out today that I failed Step 2 CK again. I have the following attempt scores:

Attempt 1: Score 183
Attempt 2: Score 187
Attempt 3: Score 201

I have social anxiety disorder and general anxiety disorder. It's been such a challenging journey for me to come this far in med school. The first two years were okay and all my grades in the basic sciences were great. Once 3rd year started with rotations though, my anxiety level was through the roof and I was constantly getting panic attacks. I failed on my first step 1 attempt and then I mustered up all the courage I could and reattempted it few months later and squeaked by with 1 point for a passing score.

Couple of months later, after my internal medicine rotation, I attempted the Step 2 CS and I was so unbelievably anxious and nervous - but I ended up passing somehow. I felt motivated and immediately went to studying for the Step 2 CK - I wanted to make it in time for applications (sept 2012) I did the UWorld Qbank (52% overall) and an NBME (204) and attempted the Step 2 CK and got a failing score of 183. I was devastated. I was so depressed. And my anxiety level was just getting worse and worse. For the first time in my life I decided to go see a pscyhiatrist - he put me an Lexapro. I felt amazing and after a few months I decided to start studying for the Step 2 CK again. This time I don't know if it was the meds that I was on or not, but it was like I was just in this state of "i don't care what happens anymore" and I went into the CK not preparing well and failed again - score of 187.

At this point I discontinued Lexapro and finished my final rotation and just started studying for my step 2 ck. This time I redid the UWorld Qbank (62% overall) and then redid all the questions I got wrong. I did UWSA and got 215, the free 150 questions said 80%. I was going through all the tricky questions on all of these forums. Believe me when I tell you that I gave it my best and felt confident this time that I knew my stuff. I've been studying MTB2 throughout all of my attempts and by now I knew that book inside out (read it like 10x).

After coming out of the exam center this time, I can honestly tell you that it felt like the worst exam in terms of difficulty out of the three attempts. It's almost like they increase the exam difficulty with each attempt you make. I'm not sure what to make of it. I was so unbelievably anxious but I still tried my best and I can't believe I failed again - I thought I would at least pass.

You can't understand how hard its been for me to just get to this point - constantly fighting all of the anxiety, stress, and depression - and I feel like it's all been for nothing. I've never told anyone about my anxiety issues. I feel like my life is over and I let down my family. My parents were counting on me and now all I can tell them is that it's too hard for me to pass this exam. After this third failed attempt, I am waiting to see if my school will kick me out or allow a 4th attempt. But, even if I manage to pass with a 4th attempt, how will I ever get into a residency...

I am so sorry to hear about your difficult journey.
However, you should be proud you passed step 1 and cs!!!
That is better than I have done.
I understand it is so hard to sit multiple times for these long and tedious exams.
The fact that you have kept trying is a testament to your determination and perserverance.
Thats what I keep telling myself.

All the best wishes.

I am so sorry to hear about your struggle. I will pray for you. I do hope you find some help, maybe medication or therapy may make things easier. You will do much better if you find a way to cope with the anxiety. look after your health and yourself. that is what matters the most. nothing else is as important.

Im so sorry. I admire your courage and perseverance. I don't think i would have it in me. Don't give up. Every time your one step closer. Take some time off. God will bless your dedication. And most of all...take care of yourself...nothing in this world is worth risking your health.

Thanks for all the support everyone. My school told me that I can try again. So, I think I'm going to take some time to recuperate and then give it another shot.

try to manage your anxity before you start again , and never ever take the exam unless you score high in assessment exam , you have to belive in your selfe that you can do it , and but in your mind this is your the last chance to aprove 1st of all to your self that you can do it with high score. no matter how long it take dont give up , this is your last chance dont waste it
good luck.

Default No cry!

Bro,
Don't worry about residency programs right now, there are plenty of spots for people like you in multiple specialties. I knew people who graduated at the bottom of their class taking 3-4 attempts on all step exams and still matched into fields like anesthesiology (a stretch, but possible). However fields like psych, occupational medicine, PM&R and even pathology are not as concerned about your scores as they are your dedication and personality. Find out if your school will allow you are fourth attempt and have courage. You have come so far, and have a bright future!
