pancytopenia is a general term for decrease in all types of blood cells

MDS is characterized by pancytopenia although there is hypercellular marrow

Pan =all cytopenia = reduced numbers.... It can have many causes : myelofibrosis, tumor infilration, b12 def MDS etc etc congrnital as well.
Mds is just one cause of pancytopenia. There is DYSPLASIA of the marrow which may present as mono, bi, pancytopenia or as leukemia simce patients with mds are at an increased risk. Hope this helps
