How long ago have you started studying? How long until your exam? You are not done with step 1, right? Because if this is only the beginning for this long-long USMLE road I think your speed will improve a lot once you are more familiar with all the information that you have to know for this exam.

It was very similar for me when I first started doing questions for step 1; I couldn't even do timed mode or timed tutor!!! But with time I got more familiar with the information, the concepts... everything and speed was not an issue anymore! And, for the real exam, I finished every block a few minutes earlier.

Try to read the last 1 or 2 sentences of the question stem first and figure out what the answer to the question is about: Do they want the diagnosis? Or the physiopathologic mechanism? This way, you will know better what information focus on when you read the whole question stem.
Also, you can try highlighting key words in the last sentence (like "diagnosis" or "physiopathologic mechanism" and so on) so as not to forget your main focus while reading the question stem Because, when you do a lot of questions in a row, that will happen!

Good luck!

i hope i can help ....

i guess the key is practice.. practice .. practice

what i found v .effective to me is highlighting , from the beginning and from the first read i highlight all the imp information : gender , age , main complain and positives and negatives in history at first i was slow but with time and more practice you will find that you are improving .. some times if the stem is too long i start with reading the last lines and answers first to have the sense of what is the question exactly about .....

and during your practice even if you have a lot of time try always to do the questions quickly in the exam you will find yourself in rush in each block like you are competing with time
