USMLEWorld A querry/Confusion about UW and CK

Hi,
Hoping the best for you.

I am getting confused by reading some of the comments about UW, QBank and about use of FA. Because I found your posts very useful and accurate and to the point. I believe you would award us with your opinion by addressing this puzzle of mind; as this so many others may have too.

My original plan was, after studying Medicine, I would take UW (I am doing Step 2 CK first, before the Step 1) and would keep on doing UW as I would progress with , other studies of remaining subjects. Means I would add on my subjects in UW after completing the other subject like Medicine, then Pediatrics, then, Surgery, then Psychiatry likewise.
Now I am reading that UW should be used ONLY after completing/studying all your subjects. (I don't know if UW have the option of subject by subject option as Kaplan has.)
Another point where I need your advise is at what point I should study FA (First Aid for Step 2) or do I need it ? I am confused and need your help and advise and I really appreciate your services.
(By the way, I am reading Kaplan Notes and using video lectures only at this time)
Sincere Regards
Hashmi

Hello Hashmi

Most of us read Kaplan notes first and then do UW for the simple reason of making the best out of the QBank, as it will clarify points in the literature that we didn't pay attention, thus creating memory. First aid for 2CK is not considered a high priority book, as in step 1. If you check the polls, you will see a few options there. Unfortunately, I haven't found something that would serve the same role as FA did in step 1. I bought the Ayala book, and it is quite useful.

Most of our members do not recommend FA for the CK as you can see here
First Aid for Step 2 CK
My personal recommendation as an outstanding replacement to FA for CK is this book
Conrad Fischer Master the Boards for CK

Integrating questions early on in your prep plan is a good idea. But you need to leave a whole qbank (whether it's UW or Kaplan or any other) completely after finishing your primary reading. Because doing random, timed, unused, all subjects, blocks is the way to go few weeks before the exam.
