Default Crush step 2 and UW q bank for USMLE Step 2 CK

Pls give me some advise...

Im an IMG from Asia. I had my local boards last 08/2013 so im a LITTLE familiar with some basic stuffs already. But I need to review old knowledge to be able to recall them during the exam. Im currently studying for my step 1 which I will take on May 2014 then ill proceed to step 2 Ck. I only have 5 weeks to prepare for Step 2 CK.

What is the best study material for step 2 CK given the time frame? Is it enough to study (1) step 2ck UW qbank and (2) Crush Step 2 for the USMLE step 2 CK? Im planning to add Kaplan IM, but I dont think I have enough time to read it. I want to be able to read everything at least twice. Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

hmmm IMO 5 weeks is way too short... although step 1 basics help, but you need to learn flowchart of dx, management and clinical concepts to solve the kind of qs presented by 2ck. The exam is getting harder, don't take it lightly.

Doing uw w/o good grasp of concepts seems to be a waste of such a great study tool. But this is just my take though.

Thanks! I rescheduled my step2 ck to july. I'll take step2 CS first in June 3.
Hows 8weeks of studying for the CK? Is that enough?

I think the preparation for CK depends A LOT on your basic clinical knowledge. If it is good, then you don't need to do so much. 2 months full time would be short, but enough. If your basic clinical knowledge is not that great, then you'll need more time.

Also, I think CS doesn't require much studying, so you could start studying for CK while you're studying for CS.

Same thing about the material. UW is a must, but for the books... I personally did not use KLNs, I think it's a terrible source. I used MTB, which I did not like much either & many different sources trying to make my own notes... I will write a post regarding preparation.

Good luck!

Thanks! This is very helpful.
I look forward to reading your post regarding the preparation. :-)
Just a little background. I took my local boards in the Philippines 6 mos ago, and I worked as a primary physician for 4 mos. I think im a little familiar with the clinical knowledge, But I dont want to be over confident thats why i still want to review for the CK like everyone else. im currently reviewing for step 1 which im gonna take on May15. After my exam Im gonna travel to the US and start with step 2 review right away. I'll follow your advise, Im gonna start studying Ck, then maybe shift to studying for the CS 5-7days prior to the CS exam in June3.

Thanks again!

I'm also in the same boat as you, will take step 1 on 16th june and cs on
july 7. But will start preparing for ck right after step1 from 18th june will take ck in august (15-20). I'm preparing 1-2 cases for cs daily these days so that I dont neglect cs. I'll spare first week of july exclusively for cs and ofcourse travelling to usa.

Default Just a little change of schedule

After I saw the poll on the amount of time to prepare for CS, I thought maybe I should give it 2 weeks to prepare like everyone else. Luckily I saw an available sched on June 10 for step 2 CS so I grabbed it.

So heres my new sched: Final!

May15- step 1
*travel to the US on May26 :-)
June 10- step 2 CS
July 30- step 2 CK

On May27-June9:
Study for CS during the day (8hrs with SP)
Study for CK at night (4hrs max)
*i hope I can finish my first reading of Crush Step2 in 2 weeks, 4hrs per day*

On June 11-July 29
Dedicated study for the CK: uw qbank and review of Crush Step2 (maybe 2 more readings??? Or maybe ill get another material)

I hope this will work.

If you scored really well on step 1, you probably can get it done with that time frame. A friend of mine, you can search him in this forum and see his study schedule - harlesmd - he only had 3 mo for 2 ck and he scored very well. But he is a prodigy though.

It also depends on what is your target score. best of luck to you!

Doesn't take longer than 2 months to prepare for CK if you know what to read. Get yourself MTB2 and 3 and do it alongside UWorld Qbank. Read the explanations in the Qbank and add pertinent points to the margins of MTB2/3 for easy recall. I hardly studied more than 6 hours a day and I am addicted to online gaming so i'd spend 10 hours gaming then 6 hours studying. If i can pull off a 256 so can you. You just need proper guidance. I had no idea you had to read MTB3 as well. I started reading MTB3 a month before my exam date. I thought I was monumentally screwed but things worked out. The exam is tough I won't lie but as long as you know your basics you'd be just fine. Make sure you read MTB2/3 cover to cover so much so that you remember the pages and it's contents. 2 months is ALOT of time! In your case it's a couple of weeks short of 2 months so I'd suggest the following:
1.MTB 2 for Internal. Supplement Neuro with MTB 3.
2. Other specialities from MTB 3. Just stick to these 2 books.
3. Make sure you read Psychiatry really well. I screwed up cuz of psychiatry. Read DSM V. For Epidemio and Biostats you can go through the Kaplan notes. Drugs Ads are easy peasy. But take them seriously.
4. Avoid Kaplan notes. They will do you no good. MTB 3 is a condensed form of all Kaplan notes. Avoid them cuz you won't retain any of it towards the end and you'd feel inadequate not been able to revise it. So stick to these 2 books and UWorld.
5. Make sure you get atleast a week for revising stuff! Leave Epidemiology Biostatistics Psychiatry Surgery revision for the last 2 days. Make sure you revise Psychiatry! especially the durations which are essential for diagnosis. Self Assesment exams are a given. Totally your prerogative. Take them whenever you feel comfortable taking them. Personally I skipped them altogether. Unnecessary tension lol. But stick to the time tested method of periodic self assessment.. I am the exception not the rule.
6. Get a good night's sleep before the exam! I can't stress this enough! Atleast 6 hours!
7. Exam day. Timing is the key! I wasn't too comfortable with my pace in the exam. 3 Blocks I ran out of time. I even failed to attempt one question in one of the blocks. TIME YOURSELF!!!! for that you gotta do UWorld! TIME TIME TIME!!! It doesn't mean you should keep staring at the timer! Just make sure you don't spend way too much time on a single question. If you can't get to the answer in 1:30 minutes, mark it and come back to later. You may or may not get time to come back to it and you'll end up guessing but it's still better than wasting precious seconds on one question. Learn to move on

You'll do fine. Take care!
