Default My exam Experience

Old IMG, Step 1 score 260: My step 2 target was > 270, end up 269
Study time 3 months: I was working the first 1 month; so studied well the last 2 months when I did subscribe UW
Study material: MTB 2/ MTB 3(Twice); Kaplan Surgery, Pediatrics and OB/GYN. Once
Q Bank: UW 2 months subscription once 83% and I did repeat marked and incorrect around 300 questions in the last week
Self assessments: UWSA: 265 10 days before exam
Last 10 days after UWSA: Did revise UW incorrect/marked, few topics on USMLE secret (my weak subjects on self assessments). Stopped study 3 days before exam; my UW Q bank expires on same day.
The day before exam: I tried to go to sleep 2 hours early but had trouble falling down, finally did sleep, and wake up after 3 hours of deep sleep. Then again multiple fragmented sleeps with weird dreams including I missed z exam sleeping.
Exam: I did find it doable and tricky as well. The problem was not with the difficult questions but with the silly, few line questions on common subjects; I did loss a number of them.
Internal Medicine: I think MTB 2 contain the subject well; you may add neurology from MTB 3
OB/GYN: I did both MTB 2/3
Pediatrics: At least the first 70 pages of Kaplan pediatrics + MTB 3
Surgery: MTB 3 + Kaplan cases
Psychiatry: This is a tricky subject on the exam; try to learn how to differentiate related disorders like PTSD/Depression/ Adjustment disorder with depression. Anxiety/ Drug induced anxiety/ Social anxiety. They will give you cases with mixed components from different diseases. I did Step 1 FA + MTB 2/3 which cover most subjects.
Epidemiology % Bio: Step 1 FA more than enough
Drug ad & Abstract: I find them doable as long as you have time at the end. Try to learn the patter of questions on UW % Sample questions from the website. First read all the questions. Then go to ads or abstracts. That worked for me.
Good luck guys

I think it is helpful to read the books while watching the videos. Learn the concepts from the lectures and have your own algorithms for common workups. It helps a lot.

Bisotatistcs are mostly mixed. They ask more NNT, AR, ARR, Odds and RR questions. Know to how to answer them given in sentenses. Also few Sensitivity/Specificty questions. Good luck.

I didn't do any thing except the UW and official FRED questions. The exam questions are similar. These are the techniques I used
1. Do them always at the end
2. Read all the questions first
3. Read the adds/ abstracts heading and conclusions
4. Then read the text and pictures to look the answer

These are things I find them more important
1. Give special emphasis for the foot notes on the diagrams or statistical data
2. In abstracts look for statistically significant values in out comes
3. Look also the recommendations from the studies
4. Look the recommendation of the drug add and specific recommendations/contraindications

You can come up your own plan to answer such questions. One thing for sure; these are the questions where the are simply asking your comprehension skill, like sophomore English. And the answer is in front of your eyes .

You rarely get 50:50 answer choices in such cases. Almost always the answers are direct.

I advice you to repeatedly do the UW and sample questions and learn how they ask such questions, where the answers exist. Try to come up with your own plan. As long as you save time at the end you can answer z questions. Hope it helps.

I am planning to apply for the 2016 match ... And currently I'm only preparing from home. Haven't worked since my graduation which is around 8 months ... so I will have a good on year on my CV where there will be a gap from work of any kind. What do you advice I should do? How harmful is that? Also it will be 3 years from my graduation date when I apply in 2016...
