Hi

Well done! How long does it take to complete UW and K Notes/how many hours a day learning schedule?

I just like to have general idea in terms of time management for myself. I work full time. I don't think I'm ready till the end of this year!

Thanks

Hi Md5rr,

I'm going to go ahead with London centre later this year too.
Please keep updated how you gets on with your exam.
Best of luck!

Thanks very much. I'll let you know.
I'm getting 63% on UW, which isn't bad, but hopefully can get that up a few notches before the test.
For those just starting UW, don't worry with bad scores. It takes a bit of time to get used to the question style - to work out the method of answering. Therefore, the first few tests you do are very likely to be highly unrepresentative of your level of knowledge, but reflect your inexperience with the question format.

one question I got wrong and was interesting was

5 yr male child with pain in the hip joint
limping since morning
pain worsens with movement/wt bearing
no swelling, no fever, pulse 92 RR 26 BP 100/65
mild rhinorrhea and dry cough but clear lungs

H/o respiratory tract infection 3 days ago

tenderness to palpation of joint

question is what is the next step in Mx
-restrict wt and NSAIDS
-Aspiration
-Broad Spectrum antibiotics
-MRI of joint
-Assay of rheumatoid factor...

@aghamahmoud: that is correct, but what was your reason for that answer?
@arunjose: Septic Arthritis would cause systemic changes like fever and toxic look. the child would not look well

answer
Transient synovitis of the hip joint is common at this age.....and resolves by itself....with no interference
so the answer is
rest and NSAIDs

I was thinking along CDH/aseptic necrosis or something

not CDH- it is screened for at birth in the US and evident from when child walks
not aseptic necrosis- aseptic necrosis is not painful or tender
not Septic necrosis- because it causes systemic changes like fever, tachycardia and toxic look

I am starting psychiatry today, will do the leftover questions of pedes on saturday...

MTB is 'master the boards', its supposed to be a really good reference for step 2....it has cases similar to the ones used on the main exam

the order of studies I want to follow would be

pedes today
surg+psyche tomorrow
IM cardio
neuro
respi
blood
infectious disease/ ENT
OBG
OBG

for the next few days....
there is purposefully no logic behind the order as I feel randomising my subjects keeps me fresh

Default Todd's Paralysis

Todd's paralysis is simply the phenomenon of a post-ictal paralysis. It is transient, and needs no Rx.
Look for a scenario where a patient has had a seizure, and afterwards is groggy, confused, disorientated (i.e. all the normal post-ictal features), but on examination is hemi-paretic.

I disagree mcq's more or revision more

if i am giving my exams in 3 mnths time
what should be more
mcq's or revision...
i am 50/50 on both rigt now
which means i only remember half of the things i studied!!!...
n my mcq's are right about half the times!!!

hi i think 70% mcqs and 30% revision. when u keep doing so many questions ull eventually know ur weak points n there u can do ur 30% revision of weak areas. but with 70% mcqs, ure basically preparing urself for all the possible questions that may be asked later.

some say do 8000 questions and if u know why u answered those 8000 questions right or wrong, then u've done a great deed to help urself for the big day.

Default Exam last week of May

Im an IMG, tookl step1 in last wk of november. For the step 2 ck Ive been studing since January, I ve read just MTB and usmle step 2 secrets, good books if you have a good knowledge base but they ommit important number of test facts, so Ive been takin notes from uworld,,,i think the most difficult part of the real exam is the lenght of the questions, Ive been told qs are longer than uworld and similar to kaplan in lenght, i just begun kaplan but its harder than uworld, so in conclusion i think the examn dificulty is similar to uworld and the lenght to Kaplan q bank, DO U know of any good NMBE apart from 4? I did nmbe 4 2 wks ago got 211/420 did really bad in psycho, now in finishig my 2d read of the MTB and watchin some kaplan vid of int med/psych from the year 2001 but are really good! and startin cases files psycho.

I am stuck at Cardio, its kind of funny...Cardio used to be my strongest IM dept in undergrad, but now I feel like I dont know anything about cardio. Have been doing it for 3 days straight now but am still learning new things.

oh good... some others who find they are slowing down too...

i was def slowing down with surgery because when i attempted kaplan qbook aftr the 1st read i was like slow and then N.Elham told me to do offline UW with reading KLN surgery one more time (just the first part, not the vignettes) and tht's helping... as im reading the notes, i see where i went wrong...

peds was the best subject for me... obgyn took two reads of KLN but still scored pretty low on kaplan qbook... again i was told to do UW offline.. so i have yet to do tht...

a bit reluctant to start reading KLN int.med... its just soooo long.... so many pages... sigh.....

Ok I had an online study partner some time back, and though we dont study together any more, she made a study schedule for us ( I didnt know how to use google docs to make schedules till then)
and the best part is it is helping me in keeping track of what I am doing.

so if anyone else wants to make a study schedule, this is how you go about it

Under the GoogleDocs logo, click on the CREATE NEW BOX >> FROM TEMPLATE
Under PUBLIC TEMPLATES, Search for the following: MDnotebook.com Study Schedule Template
Click on USE THIS TEMPLATE. The sample template will now open up.
In the left hand corner, next to GOOGLEdocs Logo, rename the title of your spreadsheet by clicking on: Copy of MDnotebook.com Study Schedule Template and replacing it with your username or a name that can be uniquely identified.
Personalize your schedule
Click on FILE >> SAVE

I think this one is the template my SP created but you can use others too.

Post group study

thats gr8 guys..so lets start the group study...since everyone is doing some or the other chapter in medicine..i propose we start with medicine..lets group 2 chapters together so that we can be a bit more on a fast lane ..since some in this group are doing resp ..i propose we start with the first group consisting of
resp and infections
???
lets give it a week n then at then end of the week post questions or anything related to these 2 topics..we can even post notes since some of us aredoing mtb 3 while othrs aredoing kln or fa..this way we can get a more indepth into the subject with out physically going through every book
i am open to suggestions..so if anynoewants to modify it ...please let me know ....
but one thing i want from peole aggreing for the grou pstudy..commitment to stay committed....not t odisappear after a few sessions or give no regular input..
start reading!!!!!!!!!!!
