Arrow I took the CK Yesterday!

I took the CK exam yesterday!
It was a lengthy tiring exam. Although I finished on time and had enough time to revise marked questions, I was always in a hurry. There were a lot of long questions. So, for test-takers, make sure you read quickly, like scanning the question, and don't pause on every word, as many findings are just repetitions of ones already mentioned.

I felt there was a lot of preventive medicine and biostatistics questions. They seemed pretty tough. Many of the questions had tricks in them, like giving a classic presentation of a disease while the lab results contradict the diagnosis, shifting your attention to another choice. This sometimes creates confusion, as you don't know if you should go for the classic disease, or should you choose another option because of one contradictory lab result. This reminded me of Kaplan Qbank.

So overall I have a mixed reaction. But that's what most people say when coming out of the CK exam. You don't feel so confident, like in Step 1 for instance.

NBME 4 predicted 253, so we'll see in 3 weeks if this prediction is accurate!

Good luck all.

P.S. Please don't take all my advice for granted as I haven't gotten my score yet!

Haisook! I send you my best wishes for your results! I have a feeling that you are gonna have a great score! I agree that the test is more tiring and that you cannot predict your score the same as in step 1.

Thanks.

- I used NBME 4 as I mentioned in my post earlier.
- Of course you can't memorize all the values, but you should memorize some of the most common ones. I memorized Na, K, Ca, ALT/AST, ALP, BUN, Cr, Hct, Hgb (at least know the lowest values for the previous two to diagnose anemia), PT and PTT (at least know the highest values to diagnose coagulation defects). What I did is that I wrote those down on a paper and stuck it on the wall in front of me, so while studying or doing questions I'd look at them.
- Yes, I got 2 questions of those, where you can move the cursor to the areas of auscultation. You'll find similar ones in the free 150 qs (Tutorial and Practice Test Items for Multiple Choice Questions). Read more

For those asking about Kaplan Qbank,... well, I'm not sure if it's really useful. It kind of frustrated me most of the time. I felt the questions were very picky and weren't really well-written, but then again, the exam had many similar weird questions! So may be it's useful after all. I did only one month and finished two thirds of the qbank. I recommend you do the same only if you have enough time after UW, because I don't think there's a better qbank (I've tried USMLEconsult). So take it as a practice, not as a way to assess yourself, and you may avoid a lot of frustration.

Yes, I've finished UW in random timed mode (cumulative was 68%). The important point with UW is to learn from it. Scores do not mean much. With one block a day, I think you need around 2 months to finish the bank. Check how many questions you have left, and do the math. After you're finished with UW, take an NBME (preferably form 4, the latest) to estimate your score. Then if you don't like the score, you may want to delay the exam.

Of course biostatisitcs questions weren't as many as OBGYNE or Peds, but I noticed the questions were either psychiatry or biostatistics, and almost no ethics. I expected more ethics like "what would your response be?" type of questions, but there were almost none. That's why I felt there were more biostatistics. May be it's just my exam!

Yes, the percentage is similar, with IM having the majority, then peds, obgyn, then surgery, and psychiatry/biostatistics.

I'd do different qbanks than do one multiple times. So if you have time and have finished UW (or Kaplan), I'd suggest shifting to the other.

really most the posts answered many of Qs i would like 2 ask ....
YET i would ask SOME MORE .....

1.Should i start by NMBE or better by a Q bank...:??

2.About consult Qbank ... if u find it useful that is i didnot take any bank YET .... do u see that i could start by it ??? as a training for the exam preparation ..... OR it may be time consuming ... and i should delay after kaplan or UW ..banks...??

3.i would tell that i am intending 2 have UW online but i had a kaplan bank offline ...is that is good as a review of the DATA or u see the online bank more valuable

4.finally if i donot have enough time .... i would be restricted by 2 ONLY .. which do u would choose ...
UW & Consult both online OR UW online and KAPLAN offline....???

1. You should take an NBME after doing all the qbanks and studying you can in order to get a true estimate of your predicted score. Take it a week or so before your exam.

2. Well, if you have enough time, do USMLE-CONSULT, but I don't see it as a first priority.

3. It's better to do all questions online in a timed random mode.

4. I'd say UW online and KAPLAN offline.

Hope this helps.

I also depended on my Step 1 knowledge, but it seemed the questions were more sophisticated. Anyway, don't worry much, as biostatistics constitutes a small portion of the exam. If you can give Kaplan LNs a quick read on that part, esp. the types of bias, it would be great.

hey Best of Luck Haisook! you'll do great! thanks for the post.

Could you tell me the best way to approach the final month? Did you go through your KLN again while doing the UW questions? or would UW suffice.

Also, what sort of time and effort did you need ? (e.g 8 hrs a day for 5 months )... i have a couple of months left, and have finished KLN except for pediatrics..just like you i am also doig Kaplan Qbank ( SOO PICKY QNS ).. and scoring about 60%... so thinking about how to go about the last two months..

Thanks again for being a great help.

My final month consisted of doing a block (or two) of Kaplan qbank, and reading the explanations quickly, in addition to reading UW notes that I had written earlier while doing UW. I read those notes many times. They were the basis upon which I had my CK information.

I don't know if this is the best way to approach the final month, but that's what I did.

I don't study much, may be 5-6 hours at most. I take a lot of breaks, and sleep 8 hours at night. Don't overdo yourself with studying and get enough sleep to consolidate the stuff in your memory.

Psychiatry/biostatistics/ethics have similar scope across Step 1 and CK (and may be even 3), but in CK, it's a little more sophisticated.

There were some basic Step 1 stuff like the morphology of organisms causing pneumonia (for e.g. S. pneumonia being the most common cause of pneumonia "& meningitis" in adults is a gm +ve diplococcus). As to immunology, they ask about the type of immunity that is deficient e.g. cell-mediated immunity is deficient in HIV patients and in those with SCID and DiGeorge syndrome. There were some basic anatomy as well like nerve lesions. Can't remember more

Haisook, I would really appreciate it if u could give me ur personal opinion on this. Can step 2 ck be done after finishing peds, obgyn and medicine and surgery? Can one score well even if the rest of the rotations have not been done yet? Assuming u finished Step 1 already ofcourse. I'm asking because of time constraints.

Thanks and good luck!

I think these are the main rotations. What other rotations do you take at med school? If you have completed those 4, I think you'll be fine. In my country there are other minor rotations like ophthalmology, radiology, community medicine, and psychiatry. These are not as important as the main ones.

Yes, I'm done with Step 1. I started preparing (seriously) for the USMLE after I was done with all rotations. However, I was preparing in my internship year (which in my country is a final 1-year hospital-based training in many rotations, mainly the ones you mentioned - of course we did med school based rotations earlier as well).

Not sure if I helped!

I finished Step 1. Thanks for replying so quick. What I was trying to get at is, does doing well depend on the experience u gain during ur rotations for the CK or can it be done by using all those review books for CK. In addition to the rotations I mentioned: anesthesiology, opthalmology, neurosurgery, ENT, ortho, plastic surgery, urology and General surgery and community medicine ofcourse. (only rotation not done would be psychiatry because we do that in the last year).
What do u suggest?
Thanks

Statistically speaking, yes. If you are done with the rotations, you'll do better in the exam. But personally, since I haven't gotten my score yet, I don't know.

US students take the Step 2 CK after being done with the rotations, so I think it makes sense.
