Info My tips about step 2 CK preparation!

Hi guys!

I wrote posts about step 1 and step 2 CS preparation... I though I would write my thoughts about CK as well!

For some reason, it seems that step 2 CK preparation is not a clear path that everybody agree with. I think it's because the material available is rather poor and because it depends so much on one's starting clinical knowledge.

I am going to give you advice based on my personal experience, if you think you are in a similar position you may find this useful. please note: MY PREPARATION IS NOT GOING TO BE THE RIGHT ONE FOR EVERYONE!!! (I'm and old IMG, specialized in general surgery in 2013, and I did part of my residency in the UK for about 2 years)

Anyway

1) Again: step 2 CK depends A LOT on your starting preparation. if your step 1 preparation was good, and your starting clinical knowledge is good as well, you'll do ok in step 2 CK without much effort

2) UW is going to be your main source of information. The questions in the real exam are VERY close to UW

3) MTBs.... what a pain. I did not like these books. But I did not have time to look for other sources, the ones that I found were not satisfying as well (step up, FA..). I bought MTB3, MTB2 and MTB for internal medicine. I used MTB3 for pediatrics, ob/gyn, psych and emergency/surgery. I used essentially MTB for internal medicine for the rest (actually I did not use MTB2, because it was basically the same thing as MTB internal medicine...)

4) I watched the Kaplan videos for ob/gyn and peds, because my starting preparation was not good at all. I did not read the KLNs for these subjects, only the videos. They are ok. I also watched the videos for arrhythmias & cardiac emergency (again not the KLNs)

5) I did not use KLNs. I personally find these books awful and super confusing. Feel free to use them... In my opinion they just explain thinsg in a different and more confusing way.

6) I had the Kaplan qBank for about 1 month, and I did not like it, as I already mentioned in several posts . The Kaplan qs are very detail-oriented, not concept- oriented. They may be useful right before the exam if you want to recall easily forgettable things (which are not so many to be honest for step 2 CK), and if you want to add some very low yield concepts to your preparation. I wish I didn't use it, actually. It made me angry

7) I made a word file, which basically is a resume of MTBs, were I was manually adding additional information from UW. It is about 30 pages, and towards the end I was only reviewing this thingy.

My preparation, to make long story short: I was fresh from step 1 and I do have clinical experience. I started studying for step 2 CK right after step 1. I took CS while I was studying for CK, and I was also working on a couple of research projects during the same period. My schedule wasn't super-intense until about 3 weeks before the exam. (total time about 4 and 1/2 months)
I went though UW religiously once, and after that again on my wrong answers only. Finally I refreshed it and I took several random timed tests, but I didn't finish the whole thing.
I used MTB3 & Kaplan videos only, as I described above.
I used my personal word doc as a main tool for reviewing.

The exam: I was less stressed than step 1. I found it very close to UW. Not crazy questions. Several ads & abstracts, but for me they were ok because I'm very used to read abstracts and papers.... I usually had at least 10-15 min left for each block, that I used to review the marked qs and to read the ads & abstracts. I didn't find psych too hard during the exam, but I was wrong because in my score report I performed terribly in it!!!LOL... So, regarding psych guys, I don't know! I used only MTB3 & UW. Probably not good enough I don't know what to say about it....sorry

what else? ah. Self assessment: 3 weeks before around 230 (NBME), few days before UWSA, 240. So UWSA was consistent with my real score.

I hope you'll find this post useful!
Feel free to ask, I'll be happy to help
Good luck!!!!

thanks for sharing, your experience definitely helped me. my preparation plan is very similar to yours, mtbs and uw only. I do not have enough time for lecture notes, therefore I was very worried.
would you mind sharing your word file with us?

Ciao Vero!! I saw you come from IT like me ! Compliments for your step2ck!!!
I'm doing kaplan qbank subject wise, untimed. I completed 69% of qbank scoring 66%. I am finding questions a little bit difficult and doing this qbank is very depressing. Btw I think it can be useful...to add some notes that lack on MTB2 and also on kaplan books. I'll start usmle world after finishing kaplanQbank..,
Do you remember your score in kaplan qbank?
Thank you very much.

ciao
I can't remember my score on the kaplan qbank but I think it was around 65%.Don't get depressed, as I said, I think kaplan is very detailed oriented and not much concepts oriented as uw, don't bother about your score (which is good). I would suggest to do the opposite, uw first and kaplan after, because kaplan, if anything, helps to recall little details and it could be useful right before the exam.

Write me a pm if you need more info!

Thumbs Up finally my notes

Hi Guys!

Sorry for the delay in posting this... here are my notes.

It is a word doc, it is meant to be integrated with your notes from UW etc, and corrected if you think so. Towards the end of my CK prep I printed it and I added stuff on paper.

Please let me know if you don't understand abbreviations or anything, I'll be happy to help!

Also, please, PLEASE! keep in mind that these are my notes, and they MAY CONTAIN MISTAKES! so... double check with your books if you are unsure about something.

Hope it helps!

Good luck

Thank you very much! I hope this is why I'm also scoring this. My kaplan qbank will expire the next year...so I will follow your advice. I am preparing my "steps" from Italy, where I am now. I did only step 1... Sometimes I get depressed...Usmle is a sort of never ending process...
Thank you for sharing your "notes"...they are wonderful and very useful...it seems there's almost everything to remember in only 30 pages (even if they are very very condensed) Ciaoo

How did U find MTB internal Medicine? Did U find it helpful instead of step 2 ck? Does it mention most likely diagnosis, next best step, etc.?

Not very different from step 2 ck. maybe a little bit more info, but I wouldn't recommend it. I don't like MTB books. I find step up a much better source of information
