Smile Got the CK score! 99/256

I received my CK score today! It's 99/256. I was very happy, as I expected lower than this, having felt that the exam was very difficult. I also felt I did poorly. The mouse cursor speed was very slow. I had allergic conjunctivitis and my eyes were very itchy. All in all, it was a bad day that I wouldn't love to repeat.

My NBME 4 predicted 253 (600), though. So it was pretty accurate as you see.

This is my timeline in detail (total prep time ~4 mo.):

Started on: 20/11/2010 with Internal Medicine in Kaplan lecture notes.

10/12: Int Med done
12/12 - 17/12: Peds
18/12 - 23/12: OBGYN
25/12 - 27/12: Surgery

USMLEconsult started on 20/12, but started doing questions regularly by 29/12. Did 800 questions (random, tutor): cumulative score 75%.

USMLE-WORLD started on 6/1.
Done on 6/3 - random, timed: cumulative score 68%.

Started Kaplan Qbank on 7/3.
Stopped timed tests on 30/3 (did 50% of qbank, cumulative 68%) - I hated this qbank!
Resumed untimed tests after that till 7/4.

NBME on 2/4 - score 600 (253) - 20 wrong answers.

USMLE CD on 4/4 (block1: 36/44, block2: 39/44, block3: 38/44, block A/V: 5/5 -- total: 86% percent correct).

For my Step 1 score and timeline details, please click here.

------
What I think I'd done wrong:

I think I needed to have a text (other than Kaplan LNs) to read along with the questions. Something like FA or MTB. Because I think as you proceed with the questions, you'll inevitably start forgetting the more classic topics (as the questions usu. bring up rare and difficult topics). That said, however, I felt my exam was vague and had a huge chunk of obscure and weird material, stuff I'd never be able to find anywhere.

----

That's it! Thank you all people in the forums for your help and support!

Good luck!

Thanks, kemo, best of luck to you too.

I did Kaplan qbank online. Don't memorize Kaplan LNs. It's not possible. Just give them one quick read. And don't read them again (unless you really have the time).

Yes, I recommend some textbook that's summarized enough, like FA. I have this book, and when I opened it by chance by the end of my prep, I found basic info that could've helped me if I read it earlier.

The questions were 4-5 lines mostly with like 25% quite long (more than the height of the page!).

Thanks.

USMLE consult seemed very easy. Kaplan qbank is much tougher.

Yes, I took a 100 page worth of notes from UW.

Last month was Kaplan qbank + reading UW notes.

Arrow Congrats!

Congrats! You did amazing!

You said to read Kaplan LNs just once...how would anyone understand or memorize the info in one time? Did you just do a lot of questions after reading the KLNs once?

Also, can someone please tell me what is MTB that everyone keeps talking about? And is this book better than kaplan LNs? how about the First Aid for CK?

My clinical knowledge in med school was good, so I read the KLNs once and quickly. I depended on questions for actual prep.

MTB is Master The Boards for Step 2 CK. It's a new book, but it's getting very good reviews. I haven't checked it out myself, though.

Kaplan LNs + FA is still an excellent combo.

Default Congratulation

Hi Haisook, congratulation !!!
I will start studying full time for Step 2 CK and CS at the same time but probably I will focus more on CS in the next few weeks as I will sit for the exam on early June.

Anyway, I will start reading Kaplan Lecture Notes for 3-4 hours per day, and the rest of the time will be for practising CS cases from FA. As study resources, do you think these will be enough :

- Kaplan Lecture Notes
- MTB for Step 2 CK
- Kaplan Qbank
- USMLE World Qbank

I only have less than 4 months for step 2 CK. Do you think it's doable ?
Thanks

Congracts !!
Iam planning to do FA + qbanks for the Ck exam ?? do u think thats good plan?
I think Kaplan LNs can be waste of time as in the day of the exam one wont remember anything from? what do you think!
thanks in advance

If you can do it in this period of time, it would be great. If not, I find it hard to suggest KLN over MTB or vice versa, because I haven't checked out MTB myself. If you're short on time, choose only one of those resources. I can't even say that Kaplan qbank is necessary.

In short, my prep was largely experimental and it just worked out for me. I'm not sure if it's a perfect plan for everyone, though.

If your clinical knowledge is good, go for it.
Kaplan LNs are pretty big, but they may offer more in-depth explanations. This would suit those who have below average clinical knowledge.

I read the LNs just because everybody suggested them.
