Idea! My daily step2 prep progress diary :)

Ok.. As many of you know I already did my step 1.. Now its time to tackle the 2nd monster

I am at present working and since I joined recently I am yet to get an internet connection. Don't have an SP yet and am finding it difficult to concentrate on my studies !!!

So, I decided that I will post my DAILY STEP 2 progress on this forum.. Just to keep it as a diversion for myself and as a self reminder.. Others are welcome to join me so here goes.....

Yeah...finding the RIGHT one is hard LOL, anyway I am about to start preparing for CK and CS at the same time. Can you share us your general plan to tackle CK ? You did very well on Step 1 and I believe you will do the same or even better on step 2 CK.

Listening

Touchwood and Thank you for your wishes

My plan so far is that I need to get through one read of kaplan asap. I am simultaneously reading Fa. I have ordered the online mtb2 and they told it will take 3 weeks for it to come :0

So that's the plan so far. Since I don't have an internet connection it makes the planning aspect difficult for me still, like a GOOD poker player, I am keeping my eyes and ears wide open and observing how others are going about in their preparation

Smile The story so far......

I started studying from may 3rd. Since I had to move to a new work place and as I was not sure of the working atmosphere, I brought along with me only Fa and kaplan medicine. Am planning to go home at the end of this month and that's when I am planning to bring my remaining kaplan notes

So many people have recommended doing mtb.. So I placed an order online before coming over here. They said it will take 3 weeks for it to come.. So I hope by the time I get back the book will be waiting for me with open arms

My studies so far has been pretty much irregular.. Its taking me time to adjust to this new place.. New sleeping environ (am a fickle sleeper!), new accommodation, new Roomi!!!

At present am working in the neurosurgery dept.. Pretty awesome ... I get bombarded with a daily and the only expression I seem to be able to convey is a blank one lol

So, I have read endocrine, gastro, cvs, musculoskeletal and haeamtology so far. I read first from kaplan and then the corresponding part from Fa... Kind of a reinforcement I guess

At the time of writing this I wanted to start the haem part from fa, but my bloody laptop charger just stopped working!!! So I hope I can get a replacement here locally or I will have to wait till the end of this month!!! Ouch.. There goes my justice league viewing time

Tom is my 24hrs duty in casualty.. That's like handling 1000 patients.. Alone!!!(now u can stop wondering why I watch the justice league ) anyhow, not much of studying, eating or sleeping tomorrow! Still I will try to give u an update tom...

Ciao and wish me luck

How do you find FIRST AID STEP 2 CK??

i don't know why many people say its not recommended and kaplan is more than enough.

in step 1 first aid is helpful .

@ kemoo . I find its not bad at all. Ya I agree, Fa is highly essential for step1. But I am waiting to go thru master the boards before I can form a definite opinion

@dr: both of them are quite similar so far, au contraire I must say that fa has got few more points than kaplan.

Ok.. So finally got a strong tea into me and have the energy to type...!

Yesterday was not as bad as it seemed thanks to gods grace.. the patient load was monumental but I just dug in deep and kept on goin! Not a wink of sleep last night and I had to do the neurosurgery rounds till afternoon! I skipped the evenin opd... I wonder what my attending will have to say tom

Well that's quite beside the point now ain't it.... yesterday I was able to go through only half of Fa haeamtology.. And today I was way too disoriented to think straight let alone tackle a difficult subject! Hoping to complete it tom... And start a new topic my mom called and said that my mtb had arrived... Looking forward to having it in my hand... Soooooooooooooon..

Ok.. time for my daily report... at least some people are reading.... For now!!!

Finished Fa haeamtology and started off on kaplan nephro... Its going fast I presume... It can be attributed to the fact that the material for STEP2 is quite similar to that of step1.. You get a sense of deja vu when reading...

Frankly speaking I am in no position to give s complete opinion on it because still I am on the look out for offline uw... So I am yet to see the type of questions get thrown at us in STEP2 ... Maybe once I face them my confidence will take a beating!

Today again I have a 24hrs shift.. So, it means today and tomorrow my studies take a beating...!!! Lets c fellas how much more I can take

Well I am happy that some of you find my meanderings and ranting to be interesting

Lets C.. I was able to complete my kaplan nephro , but like how I guessed the next post off duty day was a total drain.. Call me neurotic but the only time I can sleep is in the night... Period! No afternoon naps or siestas for Me.... !

Well today I have to finish my fa nephro... Speaking of which the STEP2 fa is certainly different from step1.. step1 had more high yield material.. STEP2 Fa is like reading a shortened review of all books!!! I may have to change my methodology of study after going thru mtb... till then fa it is.. Knowledge from whatever the source is always welcome

Ok.. I am done with fa nephro.. That leaves me with infectious diseases for tom... Usually I don't study on sundays.. But since I have wasted a lot of time this week and also I will be wasting more time next week I guess I should make the best of the available time tom

I seem to be procastrinating a lot.. Its like a railway engine going at half speed and seems to be derailing at every available chance! Blame it on the partially completed track, a slow moving engine and a driver who is just not able to focus!!!

I just hope this slow moving passenger train will become the bullet train soon....

Fine... I agree.. I am guilty for procastrinating... Yesterday I had the whole day at my disposal and wat did I do? Read a few pages of Fa... Solved 16 qs from qbook and remaining time was spent movie watching and day dreaming!!

Todays 24hrs duty.. So obviously naturally I won't be studying anything (as if I need an excuse!) maybe my pace will pick up once I start off on mtb... Or maybe I am day dreaming again

I know i have been out of touch over the past couple of days. I had a night duty, then a day off where i only slept and then had to do packing and then traveling, then at home, then shopping and now i have a bit time to write into my personal notes

Brother of mine is getting engaged over this weekend so its going to be busy... Other than the regular engagement hectic works i also have to put up with nosy relatives, neighbors and parents colleagues who wonder why is the YOUNGER boy, getting engaged before the ELDER one

Also i have come down with a damn flu and my throat is so sore! Its a catch 22 situation... I know i need rest, but still i cant

The only bright side is that i had a quick glance through MTB2 and it sure looks beautiful...

See you after the weekend guys.. And keep that mail coming in

Did you receive your MTB already?...duh... Mine just got shipped...

This is my first study plan.

I gave two months to subject wise study taking Uworld along with FA and Toronto Notes (thats the only one available here and I didnt bring any books from back home) taking notes from UWorld in TN
I took UWorld in tutor mode and took it subjectwise

Now UWorld is done once, I am planning to keep MTB as base book and solve UWorld once more, mostly the incorrect and marked options, again in Tutor mode though. I have felt that notes from UWorld were the most HiYield for me in Step 1. So I want to make better notes from UWorld this time and commit them to memory (well.....best effort at trying to commit.)

I am hoping to do this by the end of this month and then start on a third round of timed and randomised UWorld.

My eligibilty period is from May to July. I was hoping to take the exam Mid June, but that seems fairly impossible now. I am hoping end July or maybe one extension wont be too harmful if I get a good score..

Thats a very nicely thought and planned schedule you have out there! Just give it a little bit more time... If you still feel you arent prepared well enough then by all means go ahead and postpone the exam

I hate travelling in bus.. I really do... Makes me all sick and sleepy and nauseous I love trains though

Main reason why I am makin this point is to tell that I didn't read anything today.. I hope to start reading from tom.. I hope to solve some questions along with that.. It will give me an idea of the beast I have to deal with to get out of this purgatory

I know its been quite sometime and my sincere apologies.. Things have been keeping me occupied on the personal and professional front.

So, I went through mtb and at the risk of being branded as an outcast I have to say that I am totaly disappointed! Yeah.. I said it.... And there is a reason for it.... I did neurology from mtb and then sat to solve the offline uw questions of neuro.. And boy.. Was I in for a surprise...

There are so many topics they have skipped in mtb... The differentials for ataxia, the differentials for enhancing and non enhancing lesions in brain even the differentials for stroke... These are just a few to name and so far I have done only 1 block!

I am yet to write off mtb... I will go thru a few other topics before coming to a conclusion.. But truth be said first aid in ck is certainly having the edge... Mtb has to come up with something really mind blowing in the next few topics in order to win back my loyalty

I so agree to you on this one atleast. I am so sold on FA after going through MTB. Glad I found someone who doesnt think MTB is the last word on step 2.

I am using both FA and Toronto Notes...and TN is pretty good too...perhaps that is why I could not relate to MTB. I used these two books in step 1 and found they covered almost everything. MTB is like an additional thing to go through and it adds very little to the pool. It is more by way of review which I already had..so!!

When are you planning on scheduling your exam?

Toronto Notes is more like a textbook than a review book, besides it is very bulky. If you want I could email you the pdf version so you could check it out, I havent used DejaVu so I do not have an idea about it.

Here's the amazon link to Toronto Notes but it is pretty expensive if you want to use it only as a review book

I think FA + your own books for review should do perfectly.
MTB should also work if you do not have your own textbooks at hand.
There was a poll somewhere on this forum in which people voted that MTB 2 was much better for Step 2 CK than MTB 3

In my next blog post I will probably give a more detailed review for mtb but, its great that u are comfortable with the material u r studying and not yielding to peer pressure cheerios

I think FA + your own books for review should do perfectly.
MTB should also work if you do not have your own textbooks at hand.
There was a poll somewhere on this forum in which people voted that MTB 2 was much better for Step 2 CK than MTB 3

hi...i am planning to book aug-sep slot...yeah you could mail me TN at cckgll@gmail.com....i have deja pead review 2008 pdf...if u want i will mail it to u...but looking for deja rapid review...yeah its good to be perfect with what all u have...nice...thanks

I think I mentioned this somewhere..whenever I feel prepared I guess..!:sorry:
My eligibility period is till July, I think I will go for one extension. If I still do not feel prepared....umm. will take it as it comes. But I hope to be prepared atleast by my extended date.
I am an IMG and my step 1 score is 219/93......since they quote only the 3 digit score now, (which is a bit low in my case) I need all the help I can get atleast in step 2...

Mtb has to come up with something really mind blowing in the next few topics in order to win back my loyalty
me too i read MTB neuro and i find out it dont contain a lot information thats help in uw q bank (stroke and ICH and vertigo and headache and dementia brain tumor an seizure )r not good covered so i return to 1st aid 2ck it cover it in good way in neuro
but other chapter in MTB r good iam done with infection and respiro and endocrine (it is review book not text book )so u have to return to ur text book in the topic u feel weak in it

My new 3g connection is come and i am so so so damn happy... Makes me realise that i am an internet junkie though

Ok.. now back to topic... I went through other topics of MTB2 yesterday whenever i got my free time in b/w my duty...

Like how the author says.. MTB is mainly for
a. the most likely diagnosis
b. the initial best test
c. the most accurate test

that in itself is self explanatory about the book... its not a review book neither is it full of theory since i spent 40$ to get the book i sure am going to get my moneys worth out of it.,. but rest be assured, mtb as such IS NOT ENOUGH for answering the questions

The beauty of having done step 1 before step2 is that all questions look so familiar... It sure has the pitfall of luring you into complacency, but i just cant help having a sense of dejavu (no pun intended) everytime i do a question! so far, its making me feel that i can perhaps give my exam earlier than expected

In other news, i am now on the serious look out for a SP... now that an internet connection is there, i can have better interactions and use skype!! Yipeee....

Time for update.. And i have nothing much to add... Since i have had a couple of interesting cases come my way i was busy trying to search refernces for them on pubmed... and boy, things are so bad there!! Restricted access to most of the articles..!!! thinking of ways to get around the barrier!

And yes.. I am an internet junkie.. Cant seem to have a life staying offline...!!! i know... its another form of procastrinating, but i just cant seem to avoid it!!!!

I really need to start studying hard.... I know its been quite sometime since i have been saying this,

Hoping for better luck tomorrow!!!!!!

Nothing much to report on the preparation aspect

Was held up in journal work over the past couple of days... There is a case of retroperitoneal appendicitis and damn its so difficult finding references!! I finally found 2 on pubmed.. One published in 1935 and the other in 1895!!

This means that the next couple of days are going to be even more hectic, asking around friends for gastro books and notes regarding appendix and still searching for journal refernces!!!

Couple that with, sunday i have 25hrs duty! Monday i am moving to my new quarters!! Not seeing much hope in studying over the next few days!!!!

was it retrocaecal or retroperitoneal? wow retroperitoneal, or even retrocecal appendix is something I havent seen at all! There was just one case of pelvic appendix that I was a 2nd assistant to in my surgery rotations.

I dont even know how behind I am...I was horridly sick these last 2 days...thankfully rest did the trick..

Nothing much happening on the CK front and its starting to piss me off.. Really a lot

Shifted into my new apartment yesterday and today the whole day was spent diggin up old case files looking for relevant references

So i hope to give a more optimistic report tomorrow, but by the looks of it, its not looking good

Ooopsie daisie
Some guy is posting a lot of questions and i had a hell of a time trying to locate my own post!!! Lols...

Well, thats one way to go about studying.. Somebody keeps on posting questions and that makes you realise how much actually behind u are and at least for the sake of answering them questions you will actually pick up the book and read

Here its getting quite chilly and one of my articles got published in a journal... Yay... It is indexed.. But not yet in pubmed... so keeping my fingers crossed there :sorry:

Hope my fellow studying mates are having better luck than me... Do drop in a line.. We all need as much as help as we can

that guy seems to be spamming the forum, I had trouble finding the thread too . I just hope its genuine and not some freakish desperation for the USMLE consult....

I am doing bad on the USMLE front too...am kind of in the same boat as Bassatom
managing 2 (3?) things at the same time...to top it off I am starting classes on the 23rd in US ( no not residency) so I have to arrange for everything on that front too..

Thats why Bassatom you are truly my inspiration!..At the time of Step 1 I was managing just one job and a relocation and I keep consoling myself with the thought that my low score was due to that reason...but I think you were in a worse situation than me and still managed a high 99

Aww vienn Dont say like that.. Being an AMG you are at a much much better place than me.. Because in addition to doing extremely well in my steps i have to do other extra stuff if i even hope to get a foothold into the residency door :sorry:

You will do well.. Just stay positive, confident and keep following me as i enter into one blunder after another.. It will let you know what are the mistakes you should avoid

umm.........not really
I am not an AMG, I thought that was visible to everyone...I am an IMG in exactly the same position as you and my step 1 score is 93/219..I just live in Toronto..but I believe even Canadians dont qualify as AMG's , they just have a better visa status. which helps a LOT believe me..

On a positive note, finished my pedia revision today.

you know it does help to post here.

I get back on by coming back to this thread if I have been inattentive or something.

I AM taking the CK before August now. I do not like the new change in question format. Wish me luck!

I called you Vienn because i felt its short and cute and it stops me from being reminded of my geography teacher when i was back in school My apologies though.. I seem to have touched a raw nerve there.. Quite inadaverent i assure you sincerely :sorry:

Ok... Had a hectic night on Friday.. Assisted in a Laminectomy on saturday... And spent the whole sunday cooking, washing and doing other sundry work... And yeah... saw matrix revolutions in b/w (puke)

So whats my update on the study front.. Been doing surgery from Kaplan over the past few days.. And i have one word to describe it... AWESOME
Its given so wonderfully and succintly that i was totally blown away by the book... I had to literally tear myself away from the book whenever the time came to see a patient... Its been quite sometime anything/anybody has made me feel like that

Also maybe it has something to do with the fact that surgery and ortho are 2 of my fav subjects

In other news... Umm.. Lets see... Suffering from writers block so i am not able to write down my case report... Nothing seems to be working to make that write.. Need to pen it down asap

whats happening out there with you guys..? The new format giving you the heeebie jeebies

Hey Confident my apologies, I had unhooked the net and was pretty much offline these few days...

Kaplan has already updated this abstract and drug ad type qs. Infact, I also downloaded the step 2CK material from the USMLE website and that also had it already.

It wasnt so much about Biostats as about Preventive medicine/drug trials stuff

The two questions in the orientation material infact seemed to suggest that you have to make your own interpretation of the facts given, and it seemed it is kind of random what they consider right..

No apology needed, If I did sound brusque, it was due to different reasons, I thought you just read it wrong...you are free to call me anything you wish..

I did some OBG revision and some more pedes...but pretty much my only achievement over the weekend was staying offline.. so am not attempting it again.

I saw your posts over on usmleforum. Somehow or the other I cant log in on that site, I so need an SP but this stumps me coz that is the one site where you get SP's by the dozens and I cant post there, only read. Unfortunately few of them post their email addresses, the only SP I ever had was got by contacting an email I got from there.

Coffee is one of the many triggers I believe. It doesnt trigger it in everyone who has migraine.

I had a friend who would faint due to the severity of her migraine when she had an attack. It was awful. The first time I saw her I thought she was faking it, but she actually had horrible fainting migraines and they were triggered by the heat most times.

Well, i am a coffee addict myself... Problem was that whenever i used to study i used to get these headaches and i used to think that its because of the eyestrain d/t looking continously into the laptop!! But these days, i dont do much of that still the headaches are too much.. So by elimination i arrived to the fact that coffee is to blame..

Yup.. I went through that place.. But its so so hard to get an sp there.. They all are looking for females.. Or want them in NY.. When i tried for step 1 i got them by the dozens and actually had a screening process to knock some of them out Now its like you just cant seem to get a hand on any of them
