Star 242. CK Experience.

I know 242 in CK is nothing stellar considered to the multiple 250s and 260s of this forum but still I will share my experience as I myself had planned out my prep by reading people's experiences.

Some background data
I took my Step 1 long time back and had already forgotten every bit of my FA for step 1. I graduated this year in April 2014 and the whole of 2013 I was busy doing my internship which was damn hectic and then went on for elective in January. So, my 2013 was pretty much a waste and I covered just 2 IM chapters from MTB with videos. It was not until February 2014 that I started studying and took the exam on June 5, 2014. So total study time was 4 months

What I did

IM- MTB 2 with Kaplan videos throughly. MTB 3 superficially while 2nd reading of MTB 2 IM and added whatever extra was in MTB3 to MTB 2

Surgery- Kaplan videos + Kaplan Surgical Vignettes+ MTB 3

Ob/Gyn- Kaplan Videos+ Kaplan Notes+ MTB 3. I added MTB 2 extra topics to my MTB 3

Pediatrics - Kaplan Videos ( not necessary) + Kaplan Notes( only for Infectious Disease, Neurology and Genetic Diseases) + MTB 2 + MTB 3

Psychiatry - MTB 3 + MTB 2 for child psychiatry + Psych drugs from FA Step 1

Biostat- Kaplan Notes for Step 1 , Behavioural Sciences

Biochemistry and Genetics from FA Step 1 but only selected topics such as storage diseases, Genetic Disease Chart

I all of this one time by 28th April ie 1 month and 8 days before exam. Then I started doing UW and second read of MTB 2 IM at the same time. I started UW part random, times. I would say part random because I started doing UW with all unused questions of OB/GYN, Peds, Surgery, Psych, and added IM systems step by step. I did 3 blocks every day , revised them, added extensive notes to my MTB 2 for IM and MTB3 for rest of it. I finished the second read of MTB 2 IM and UW one time with 73% by 19th May.
Then I immediately took NBME 2 and got a 240, which was 2 weeks before exam.
After that I was confused between doing UW again or doing MTBs again as I had already wrote everything from UW to my MTBs plus I had take extensive photos of UW explanations on my cellphone which I revised in free time.
I revised Peds, Surgery, Ob/Gyn for a week from MTBs and took NBME 7 and got a 221. I was shocked as I took NBME 7 the day it got released and I had no idea about its predictability.
After that I kept on revising whatever I thought I was week in from MTBs like electrolytes, respiratory etc and took UWSA 4 days before my exam and got a 247. That gave me much needed confidence and I went ahead.

Stats

UW First Pass - 73%
NBME 2 - 240 (2 weeks out)
NBME 7 - 221( 1 week out)
UWSA -247(4 days out)

Real Deal - 242

My exam day hyper freaked out experience is here Done with CK today. Exam day experience.

Bottonline

Both the MTBs are grossly inadequate on their own so its necessary to do both. Even then their will be many questions like Step 1 to frustrate you while doing UW. Don't get frustrated, write everything down into your MTBs and if you want and have free time then you can revise selected areas from FA but thats avoidable.

What FA was for Step 1 , UW is for Step 2. I was short on time and couldn't do UW as many times as other people do but what is more important is how throughly you review the block once you are done with it. Read every line of explanations, there is lots and lots of info in there!!

I cannot stress more on this fact, MANAGE YOUR TIME WELL. Step 2 is not about very tough crazy questions. Its about super duper long, 12-15 lines long questions. Every info plus lots of unnecessary info will be there in the stem so its more of a test to check that are you capable of processing the given info by reading the question in one go and then select the needed data to make the diagnosis and formulate a plan. The solution to this is to do UW in timed mode.

Don't take NBME 7 seriously!! Its designed to freak you out and underpredicts by good 20 points.

Don't freak out in the exam when you cannot mark a question cz you ran out of time. Happened with me in first 3 blocks and my 4 questions remained unmarked. In the second block I was shaking, but in later blocks I just calmed myself down and took the exam.

I didn't score that well compared to step 1 if you just judge by the mean score cz in step 1 mean was 224 and here mean is 238!!. I fail to understand this and I never will because if just judge by the mean Step 2 looks like an easy exam but don't think so. Is Step 2 doable? I think it is as doable as Step 1 but is it easier than Step 1 ? No, its not. In terms of sheer hours I put in to study, it was equal to step 1.

Congrats!
I'm taking it in 3 weeks. Mainly focusing on UW now. Done it like 4 times already. Could you give me some recommendation?
And what did you use for Dermatology?
Thanks man, and good luck!
