Star Step 2 CK Preparation; Books and Plan

After the fact that many members liked my previous post (USMLE Step 1 Preparation Books and Plan) many of the members were asking me to post what I think is right for CK prep.

Therefore, here I am posting what I think is the best way to prepare for the Step 2 CK exam, specially for IMGs since I am an IMG.

Materials:
Kaplan Lecture Notes, all of them are good and no book should be skipped. Except the Epidemiology and Ethics.
For Epidemiology you can reread your Kaplan Notes For Step 1 (the behavioral science book) for that matter.
For Ethics I recommend 100 Cases by Conrad Fischer, that book is amazingly easy to cram and contains all the possible ethical scenarios that you might be asked about in any USMLE Step.

Do I recommend Kaplan videos? Yes, if you have time. But If you don't have time you can still skip them specially if you have already done with Step 1.

Do I recommend Kaplan Qbook? Yes, I recommend you do the questions subject-wise, which means you do the Internal Medicine after finishing the Kaplan Internal Medicine book for example.

Do I recommend First Aid for the CK? No. I don't think that book is needed specially if you are done with Step 1.

Do I recommend subject-specific review books? No. I firmly believe that Kaplan Lecture Notes cover everything and you don't need a specific Internal Medicine or Surgery or other subjects review books.

Qbanks? Do Kaplan Qbank and if you have time do USMLE World and if you still have time do USMLE Consult.

Step 1 or Step 2 CK first? I recommend Step 1 first. Many CK questions integrate pathophysiology and the boards expect you to know basic sciences when they test you in the CK as it's the logical sequence.

One more book that has been recently released, which is Kaplan Medical Master The Boards for CK, I've been reading this book for the last two weeks and it's really amazing. It incorporates all the high yield information that you'll ever need for the CK exam, seriously. So perhaps that's the best alternative if you don't have the time for the Kaplan Notes, but with a warning, it should be coupled with a good amount of question practicing such as in 2500-3000 range.

Having said what I said, I remind you that no plan can fit everybody. We all differ in our needs and in our background knowledge and what score we aiming for and in our IQs. Therefore, please do not take this template as a rule, you can modify it in any way you think it's suitable for you.

For the same reason, am not going to indulge in what daily plan or number of hours or which subject to start first because that can vary from one to another significantly and it doesn't have great impact on your overall prep.

Good luck to all..

Default Need a little more analytic help

Hi
Hoping the best for you in all aspects.
I am IMG. I did my graduation apprx.23 years ago. Kept my habit of studying little bit with me during all these years.
Now I am planning taking Step 2. (First I was thinking of taking the Step 1, but then upon the suggestion of a friend who has done his exam, I changed my mind and studying for STEP 2 NOW.

I have time. I am planning to pass both steps in 2011. Dont want to rush and make mistakes.
I read your very sincere advice based upon your experiences. I always do.
Ok, during my studies, I , sometimes, think, that I should (must) read Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology (at least) before sitting in the exam. Then I think, it might be wasting of time, just pay full attention to the present studies. I am reading Kaplan notes with videos and trying hard to absorb them fully to the extent I can.
What is ur suggestion? Should I go for Pathology, Pharma, Micro or anyother "must do" subject/book?
Thanks in anticipation.
Sicnere Regards
Hashmi

Absolutely not. Since you are comfortable with doing Step 2 CK first. You'll have no problem at all.
I noticed repeatedly that those who take the CK first have to spend extra time to supplement their clinical knowledge with a little bit of basic sciences and vice verse those who took Step 1 first have to supplement with clinical knowledge.
So it's always the first step that you take that you need to work hard for it and always the next step that will be much easier as you've already covered it in your first step (be it Step 1 or CK).
I mentioned Step 1 first as a personal preference but as I mentioned it's not a rule. You can do what you think is right for you.
Many of my "old" expert IMG friends prefer to do the CK first as it's nearer to their clinical life and can get on it easier and so it kinda give them an initial push and encourage them to tackle the basic sciences later.
Bottom line, you are absolutely fine and wishing you best of luck.

I find the information in the psychiatry, epidemiology, and ethics Kaplan notes for Step 2 CK almost similar to that of Step 1 which I have recently taken and scored well in it.

So can I just reread the behavioral sciences & psychiatry sections from First Aid Step 1? But I wonder if there are bits here and there that are exclusive to CK and missing from Step 1 notes. How can I know that?

Thanks.

-Definitely the latest CK FA is not a bad book at all. Go for it.
-Which subject to start, doesn't matter. Pick and choose any.

There's very minor difference between the Kaplan psychiatry book and the Kaplan behavioral sciences book. In fact I believe the behavioral sciences book has more insights and is more detailed.
As for the biostatistics and epidemiology part they are exactly identical in both the Step 1 and the CK Kaplan notes.
So Yes, you can rely on your Step 1 materials when it comes to these subjects.
One caveat however, is that you need to do more psychiatry questions. The psychiatry questions in the CK exam are more sophisticated than what you have seen in the Step 1 exam.

I personally chose to read Step Up to Medicine, since I heard that it was an excellent book.

My question is if I read this book should I read the Kaplan medicine book, or is that redundant?

I can't really answer you because I haven't read Step Up Medicine, I suggest you scan it side by side with Kaplan Notes (take like 3 to 4 hours to do that) and see if the job would be redundant or not.

Dear step taker,

Im an IMG from india who's planning her steps out. I plan on taking Step 1 in June, Step 2 CK in the beginning of August and Step 2 CS in September.

Its a very tight schedule but I'm racing to make the 2017 deadlines. I understand that i will have to put in all the hard word to make it happen but do you this this is a feasible timeline?

Best

Pooja
