Is it advisable to keep talking to the patient during washing hands like asking if he has anything else he needs to discuss, or is it ok to remain silent at that period of time?
Personally, I find that talking to the patient during washing hands is not professional. There's less eye contact, and also, it's as if you're not giving the patient full attention, and more like chatting rather than conducting a professional interview. May be I'm mistaken, though.
hi haisbrook
i talked to the sp in each case while I was washing my hands, I followed csevideo protocol and hoping for results tomorrow so I will let you know if that was professional or not. i t worked out well for me b/c they did not seem to be bothered by it and they responded each time, i think we have such little time in the exam we have to use those moments to catch up with the sp and its too weird for every one to be so quiet i think the sp also feels uncomfortable if its too quiet.
I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I just received my score (pass), and I think talking to the patient while washing my hands actually helped.
Again, it'll depend on what you're talking to them about. I usually just asked them what they did for a living, or if they had any children. It helped break the ice, and in many occasions I found that they provided more info after that point on.
I havent received my result yet but I did that. Most of the time I asked about family life and occupation, some simple questions that "sometimes" helped me narrowing down the DDs.
