Question How can we explain "referred pain" in layman terms to a SP

So suppose your SP asks you to explain some sort of referred pain, asking why the pain shoots up or down an area... I was wondering how to put that in layman terms. What would be the best way to put it?

I would say, "the nerves from your shoulder share the same pathway to the brain as the ones from your heart, so your brain can't always tell the difference between the two."
