Default Here's the deal.

Don't ask CAGE if the patient drinks a LOT of alcohol. e.g. 6 beers a day and a case (24) on the weekends: directly give counseling. Only ask CAGE if not sure if the patient has a problem with alcohol e.g. more than 2 beers a day (men), more than 1 a day (women); if less, no CAGE, no counseling -- if drinks any amount just before driving, give counseling.

I would assume you cage no matter what if any alcohol is mentioned. Better be safe than sorry.

Was told this fact by seniors who took the exam.

I only planned to ask CAGE when someone told me they had alcohol everyday, or most days in a week. Anything less is fine in my opinion. If patient has an obvious drinking problem, then you can skip cage and counsel directly.
