My understanding is that water deprivation test is still a standard test that has to be done to rule out or rule in diabetes insipidus or primary polydipsia.
Yet in my FA edition they did not mention about water deprivation test in any of the cases that had such differential! Is that something they missed in FA or is there something particular that we should not mention water deprivation test in the diagnostic work up of such cases?

You definitely put water deprivation test in your workup. That's a mistake in FA book.
However, you better list is at the bottom of the list as it's always better to leave difficult and more complex investigations last.
Start with serum glucose, urine analysis and specific gravity, and other simple tests then go for the water deprivation test.
