Default Failed SEP only in CS

I am non US IMG with both step scores of 250+. I did my CS xms in Houston in OCt 15 and got my results yesterday
ICE: touches borderline
CIS: high
SEP: low

overall score: fail

I went to a top medical school(English medium) in my country and was one of the best students in the class. Noone commented about my English being poor: I actually have a fairly good English. Now I am not sure what to do?
Do I apply for a check? Do I retake CS exams?
or do I quit USMLE to do residency in my own country?

I have already spent so much and cant risk more money for tiny chances. How much of a chance I have to get into IM residency? Do I need step 3 in order to match?

Retake it and pass. 250+ means you'll get interviews since this was obviously just an off day for you. I find it hard to believe you could fail with such good step scores. Did others at the same venue fail. I'm always wondering if the venue plays a role.

if you failed in SEP then your only problem was english.
so thats were u need the work .
i find that with a thick accent it could be difficult to be understood even when you internally feel your speaking good english and once you find the s'p saying " what did you say?" "can you repeat that?" " i cant seen to understand you" "could you speak louder?" "could you be clearer ?" "pardon?"
then it could gravely affect your SEP

so we IMG's with accent issues : i would suggest speaking "slowly" and "louder" more volume so we could be understood! if possible change the accent. yep!. it ain't that difficult and its just for one day. I had to do the same and i had a very high grade in SEP actually that was my highest. practice using common phrases that are used here in the U.S and change some choices of wording if need be.

remember this exam also tests your english knowledge, that's why it could eb used as a waiver in some TOEFL, and IELTS required institutions in the U.S

don't mean this as a downer but from your choice of wording in some of the sentences you posted above shows a little bit of it...

e.g i actually have a fairly good English: rephrase: i think my English is actually pretty good
now i am not sure what to do: rephrase: i'm not sure now how i'm going to go about this
none commented about my English being poor: rephrase: nobody said anything poor pertaining to my knowledge of english
you gotta take it to the next level.

failing once in cs is a red flag yea but its not the end by a long shot! you have good step scores and i think you have a pretty descent shot at nailing a spot. i'll say give it another try, since you have come this far. practice practice practice ... if you have a memorised properly worded introduction, counselling, and closing remark it would go a long way. keeping my fingers crossed for you buddy!

I can help you if you are interested. I have helped dozens to improve their SEP enough to pass the Step 2 CS. Send me an email at mja1971@gmail.com, or visit english4mds.com. I am sure you can pass with the right preparation.

Default SEP

Hello,

I am sorry to hear that you failed due to spoken English proficiency. You seem to have all the medical knowledge in place and just need to learn some tips and tricks to speak English with clarity.

My company is Articulation LLC and I specialize in pronunciation training for medical professionals. Please see my website - cleararticulation.com. I would be happy to discuss with you options for training so that you can pass this remaining component of your exam.

Hope to hear from you!
