Default PE of painful area

when it is necessary to do PE on painful area but patient is in severe distress how do we act ?

first and foremost: Show empathy to the patient. Make sure you do everything you can to make the patient more comfortable. Then explain that you can see he is in pain, however you need to do certain examinations to understand his condition better. Promise to be as quick and as gentle as you can.

I will also add that to NEVER REPEAT a palpation or movement of an area that was clearly painful or uncomfortable. It is ok to do it initially as a way to assess the situation. Doing it again will count against you as it shows a lack of either empathy or being aware of your patient.
