Question When to counsel in the CS, Social History or at closure?

When should counseling be done for smoking, excessive alc. intake, illicit drug use, etc.? In one part of FA it says its during the social history just after you get the details while another part of FA says at the final summary/closure of the encounter. Both times?

I would go for it at the end, with the closure, as you're more likely to drift away from your history and lose initial time if doing beforehand. I haven't taken the exam yet though.

Both ways (at social history and at closure) are correct. Pick the method that is easier for you to remember.

This issue has been discussed here
Counseling during history taking not waiting to the end of the encounter

Also our previous staff member (lee-usmle) has recommended doing it at the social history and here's his post
Social History X 3

Also you can find many useful posts regarding this issue by clicking on CS-History-Taking tag link at the bottom of this thread.
