Default CS Tips for CS takers

Hello everyone,

I recently found out that I passed my CS exam (first attempt) I took back in September in LA. I never thought I would pass---- my experience was terrible in the sense that I missed and forgot to do a lot of things such as counsel on smoking/drinking, complete neuro exam, write all meds on PN, etc. I finished a few minutes early in all the 12 cases- so I thought I was probably doing something not right! Lol. Passing was a miracle!!!

*PRACTICE to the nth power!
- I was doing an observership for a few months before the exam which really helped me a lot. It gave me the confidence I needed with the patient encounter during the actual exam. I only practiced with non-real patients about twice- but what helped me the most was my experience from the observership where I was given the chance to talk to real patients and even do PE on them. I would then help the doctor with doing the PE notes which allowed me to practice writing PN. I did this for about 2 months. Before I started my observership I read FA. I also bought Kaplan notes but liked FA better. I subscribed to UW and watched the videos. I also watched CS videos and the CSE videos uploaded on youtube. I suck in typing so if you're like me, I suggest you practice a lot so you won't have a hard time during the real exam.

Important points during the actual exam:

1) Knock
2) Greet the patient (say the patient's name) with a smile, then introduce yourself- handshake
3) Always ask permission for whatever you're going to do
4) Show interest/enthusiasm and compassion
5) Ask questions pertaining to your main diagnosis and your differentials and always do ROS
6) After taking the history- always try to summarize- confirm with the patient you got the right information
7) Wash hands/Put on gloves
8) Always maintain eye contact with the patient
9) Always do closure! Make sure you let the patient know what you think he/she has and what you will do to confirm
10) For challenging questions: Try to answer without getting yourself into trouble lol!
