Hammer and Otoscope Examination of a Dizzy Patient?

Hi all:

For patients with dizziness complaints, can we perform Dix-Hallpike on physical examination?

And do we need to perform orthostatic evaluation (supine and sitting position BP measurement)?

Thank you!

I wouldn't recommend performing dix-hallpike as its extremely long (you can't rush it because SP wont like you telling them to keep getting up and lying down), so put it in the work up.

This is the same for Orthostatic vitals.. no point of taking BP again etc, just put it in the workup.

I suggest not doing it. I have heard of cases where the SP fell over from the table and started bleeding from the head so was taken to the hospital.

If you insist then youtube it, youll find it.

i dont think it is needed to perform the test. it takes up your time and also puts the patient in a uncomfortable posture. imagine all 12 students doing this test on the SP!.. hope this helps
