Unhappy Another "I Think I Failed in the CS" Thread

Oh man! That exam is sooo different from how one can simulate in practice sessions. Not only do you have the odd cases show up, you also have to compensate for the "over" acting the SP's do.

Anyways, in conclusion, I think I failed.

I can't remember what I missed and what I didn't write and what PE I didn't do etc. but over the next month or so, i'm sure it'll start haunting me slowly, at which time i'll come back here and post.

:sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry:

Took my exam on the 7th of May.

Advice? Oh man where do I start..

1. LIVE practice is key, this means no skype etc.
2. Learn to control anxiety, key is not to freak out:
  1. Before you enter the room
  2. When you step into the room
  3. While talking to the SP
  4. While trying to come up with a diagnosis on the fly during the encounter, especially when they show emotion to one of your responses or diagnosis ex: "WHAT! You think i'm pregnant?" etc.
  5. Coming up with the PE's required for that diagnosis
  6. When councilling
  7. Typing the note when you realize you didn't ask this particular question, or do this maneuver.
3. All cases are in FA, but are presented DIFFERENTLY. Ex. The person might have left arm pain when playing Xbox Kinect. (not an actual case but although the activity of what causes the typical pain is different, the diagnosis is the same)

4. Timing yourself is key when practicing. When practicing, we need to realize that the SP's might give elaborate accounts of symptoms or ask random things that will interrupt your flow, so need to account for this time disturbance.

6. Be prepared to face MORE than 1 "challenging" question. Account for this when timing yourself.

7. Food during the exam sucks, account for this too.

8. Those individuals with English as a second or maybe 3rd language, please practice having a conversation in English everyday, be loud and clear with word pronunciation. This isn't a VIVA exam where you can get away with things if you mumble.

If I end up remembering more things, ill be sure to post. You guys are welcome to ask any relevant questions and i'll try and answer.

Now I'll get back to freaking out about the exam. But I guess the worse part for me was that I don't remember many obvious mistakes right now, but do remember having some while typing up the note.

FORGOT TO MENTION, I just read this in the other thread: BE SURE TO NEVER DO THIS:

I have these mistakes in my CS exam!

patelMD,
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Just want to confirm if FA covers all the cases? Do I need to go through the other cases in UW or Kaplan?

Default Thanks !

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with us all ! It really does help.

Few questions though:

1. Where did you take the test ?
2. Were all the "challenging questions" covered in FA ?
3. Are you serious that ALL the cases were from first aid only with a different presentation but the same diagnosis ?

Have my exam in 5 days. So far finished about 50% of the cases from FA. Hope I have time to finish them all. Any tips would be much appreciated. Scheduled to give it in Phili.

Sincerely,

Nik.

1. Where I took the test was irrelevant because the exam is standardized. I took it in the NE region.

2. The challenging questions are definitely not the same as FA, but similar in nature, but will vary on what they ask you. FA does guide you on what to say "ex. be diplomatic but dont lie etc."

3. Yep, all cases were in FA I think. I only think I missed 1 case diagnosis, but even then I definitely got 2/5 of the diagnosis I wrote for that case.

Good luck!

I didn't quite get this. They don't mention the name of the procedure ? Or they just waste to much time talking about it ?

Thanks ! Will concentrate on finishing FA then.

All the best for your result as well ! Will post my experience as soon as I'm done with the exam.

Seriously DON'T WORRY!!

I was sobbing for this exam for 2 whole months!!! I was sure I failed. The space here isn't enough to detail what mistakes I did....and they are too case oriented and NBME doesn't really want us to post too much details.

I wasn't jolly jolly happy nor nice! I was the ONLY IMG out of 24 people!! I forgo to repeat patient's name more than once (which I did at the beginning). Forgot (or didn't want to perform) specific maneuvers for the physical exam. Forgot some of the counselling. Ran out of time in one case.

I made tons of mistakes...mostly forgetting specific case-related questions that were a must. I barely did anything inside but somehow when I wrote my PN, I forgot to document things that I did do.

My PN, I thought, was horrible. However, it was far to the right in high performance, apparently better than my English, and I'm a US native!!

Good things I did do in every case:

1- Said my greeting
2- Washed my hands (hardly talked or said anything while doing so)
3- LIQORAAA PAMHUGSFOSS
4- pulled footrest when needed
5- Answered the question (in the most personal way possible....not following FA responses.

It's not worth spending all the time on a test you most likely passed. Don't believe statistics that say 1/4 fail.....None of my 10 friends that took it together, failed....nor the ppl I practiced with on skype (and some of them..I honestly thought would fail).

I read EVERY SINGLE post on the web regarding CS for 2 whole months. By the grace of God I passed with high performance on all areas.

I did pray a lot...and no doubt in my mind that that was the difference.

Also...I made the mistake on focusing too much on other sources other than FA including Kaplan's 35 complex cases (which is awesome BTW- just not for this test).

Just focus on FA and practice. If your English is not too well...practice more.

Just wanted to update this thread:

Passed comfortably.

I just wished that more people had passed, looking at all the "I failed" threads, just makes me feel nervous that I could have been a victim of this POS they call Step 2 CS.

If anyone has questions, please do post.
