Default USMLE CS Exam Day Tips: For Examinees

Start every case with enthusiasm, regardless of how the previous case went. You never know the cases that would be selected for you .You will do about 12 case encounters and only 10 cases would count for your evaluation, so always be positive and cheerful.
Follow instructions by the proctor. Start by carefully reading the case on the door-way and other relevant information, you can take notes if you want (esp. SP's name, Age, Vitals, and CC) .
Knock the door before entering the room. Wait for a response and then slightly open the door and call the patient by last name.
Mr. / Ms. Anderson ! Hello! I am Dr Mike, I will be your physician today (Shake hands with the SP and look into SP's eyes), you must keep considerable eye contact throughout the encounter, nice to meet you! I will ask you some questions and do a quick physical exam on you, is that fine with you?
Before I proceed, I will like to know if you're comfortable in this room.
Let me cover you up”…and while saying so, DRAPE the patient’s legs up to his belly. Then, “So Mr. / Ms Anderson, what made you come in today?”
After SP tells you the CC and stops, first EXPRESS EMPATHY- say, “Oh I am sorry to hear that, I shall try my very best to help you. Do you mind if I write down a few notes while we talk”.
Are there any other concerns that you have? If yes, then ask:”Anything else?
If multiple problems, then ask:” As you have a number of concerns, what seems most important to you?”

Please tell me more about it from the beginning?
What are you worried about?
Always try as much as you can to develop a rapport with the SP's. They are very important to you on this test. I don't care about your attitude, you have to be nice to them, even if you have to pretend about it, just be nice for one day of your life

We would be posting more tips soon such as SP in pain (SP in pain, your answer:” Is there anything I can do to help you feel more comfortable or feel better right now?), handling a difficult SP, Challenging questions etc.
Relax and enjoy playing doctor, Good luck guys!
