Default Hi

I'm so sorry to hear about that, I understand that you are upset, but don't let it get you, If you believe that you have preformed well a recheck isn't a bad idea although they don't usually make mistakes. Don't be discouraged I wish you all the best.

I wonder if you asked relevant questions to the SP. You may have asked a lot of questions, but they may not have had anything to do with the SP's complaints. Always ask open ended questions. It seems as though you struggled in the CIS part as well. So, I am guessing that you may have had a difficulty building some kind of rapport with the patient?

Data gathering includes you asking the relevant questions as well as the physical exam. So, you may have had poor performance in either.

But, if you feel that you did everything right, you can ask for a revision of your score. I am not sure as to how to go about it.

Failures are part of life. We have all gone through those. And we must use failures to become better persons - better doctors. You can do it. Don't let this silly test get you down. You have so much potential. You have it in you to beat this test!

Good luck!!

@merrily: appreciate ur words, thx for ur concern. Regarding me asking lots of irrelevent things; I always followed my neumonics ( PAMHUGSFOSS/LIQRAAA in pain cases and other things) I was able to do physical and closure/counciling to all cases... But the question is, rationaly speaking lets consider that i was asking irrelevent Qs and messed up with physical exam at least i would have scored on the lower performance side as all who normaly would fail in only data gathering... one more thing to add, lets also say that i asked irrelevent Qs from were have i got the info to write it in my patient note and score on the higher side.!?!!!!?!?!!

their's something not clicking together, u know wat i mean....

I'd like if someone can notify our forum admins "sabio, step taker, rasheed,,,"

Looking at your score report it looks like you don't have a language problem (which is where most IMGs fail).

Failure in ICE and specifically in Data Gathering, means you have less clinical experience. You need to meet real patients and real clinical scenarios.

I suggest the following: do observership or externship, also go for a Live CS Course, we have them listed here
http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-st...s-courses.html

It would be great if you can do both of the above but if you can't then at least do the live course.

Default About test centers

I WOULD not choose a specific testing site because it is an 'easy pass'! I took my exam in Atlanta. I know three people who failed there. And I know someone from Philly, who (according to herself did REALLY BAD) passed! It is not the testing site that matters, it is your grasp in the information that you need to pass.

Hi!

First of all, I'm really sorry for your disappointment right now. But - remember that what matters in the end is how well you can bounce back and be stronger. You will go on to be a really good doctor and help a lot of people, and this is just one more obstacle that you will have to overcome to reach the end goal. It's hard but you worked hard to get here, and you won't let some test get in the way of where you want your life to be now, right??

As for specific suggestions on improving data gathering and rapport - try watching a video series like csevideos or something good on youtube to just get the idea of what the PE is supposed to look like. Then, get a good study partner who will make your life difficult while you go over the FA (like, waste time, be mean, cry, be uncoooperative etc). Practice all the moves and get comfortable with touching people and doing the physical. Try doing the scenario with someone watching and critiquing you.

If you don't have a lot of clinical experience, I would highly recommend a live course 2 to 3 weeks before the exam, and meeting people through the course and practicing with them. I did NYCSprep, they were helpful, and I had NO US clinical experience before the test. My med school's country doesn't do all the politeness and patient dignity that the US system wants, and even though I am a naturally polite and people-pleasing person, I was nervous about interacting with real Americans who have seen tons of US trained med students from the best medical schools who take this exam after months of doing this day in day out in the clinics!!

Also - if you get really nervous in front of strangers and people, try to do stuff that will desensitize you for it. Like - if you are in school, speak out in classes, volunteer to do presentations etc - so you don't have so much fear of the SP judging you. Or if you're out of school, try doing some public speaking or even karaoke - just to be able to act natural even when you feel like people are watching and judging you.

Also - if you go to Houston or Atlanta, be aware that there's more of a regional accent there so listen to people talking like that on youtube so you don't have extra fears of not understanding the accent.

Hope this was helpful! You have lots of people behind you, even anonymous strangers on this forum! Be strong, keep your head up and you can do this!!

The same performance, even a little lower, was mine. Well, I am going to take it in 2 weeks and I am afraid to fail it again. I understand what I did wrong, physical exam performance was terrible, I am not fluent in doing physical, as it is not what I do every day in practice. And haven't been taught at University. So I tried to practice, though very few times, in my relatives. I don't have a study partner. So, my advice to you: watch as much as you can videos on physical exam that you can find in youtube or in internet where you can find, watch WU videos so that you would do them as much as possible fluent. I am not sure, will I pass this time, hopefully I will. I did some examinations, so I don/t know how they grade for data gathering, that it was so low. If you think it will help you to pass, try recheck option, as it seems the only point that was low in your performance, but if you think it will not eventually help much, then not spend time and finances for it. If it would held you slightly from passing, it would be perhaps helpful to try it I think, why not. But even in the case that it will not help you to pass, don't lose hope. It is not impossible to pass, your other performances were better than mine. After preparing better, I clearly understand what was wrong with everything that I did on exam, so, if you will prepare once more time, your chances are even better, don't panic or lose hope. Good luck to you.

I had that female encounter which i had blew in the most were i was stuck for no reason and frooze infront of her. i got mixed up and not knowing wat to ask next so i had to jump to other parts as a run away. overall i messed up the history taking part. she asked me a Q and replied that i need to finish my exam and run some tests to be able to answer back. she asked it once more and replied similarly. never left her while washing my hands, spoke about her complaint. counceled and closed with DD and managment. while i was about to leave i asked her if she had any concerns or Qs to feel free to ask. she replied with a no, i offered her a hand shake BUT she turned her face away moved her hands behind her back and refused to shake my hand with no smile at all. as if saying just get out of my face...

While during the encounter she was staring at my face trying to tell me wt the hell r doing...forgot that too, while i was draping her for ABD exam she was looking at mirror and making faces like wat the hell..... it happened that i cought her doing that...

At the end of the test i had to fill a feedback form. at the bottom of it i had reported that incedent of disrespect......

i dont know if she had done something to ruin the whole test as DATA GATHERING is all in the SPs hands..?????

I suggest you stop spreading incorrect information.

If you feel you can provide objective statistical data from the nbme, then do so.

Until then, anyone and everyone should disregard this post.

It does not matter where you take the exam, is all the same. I know 10 people who passed from Philly and 3 people who failed from other places. Does that mean everyone should go to LA.

you have to take all the patients as a real life encounter. My husband had a pt who made him wait for 5 minutes while she talked to her stock broker, he also had a patient who told him why is he not US a grad.

Bottom line act like a real physician. Do the correct exams, ask the relavant questions. RESPECT PATIENTS MODESTY, Specially now since the exam is changed.

I suggest doing some observership or something.

He passed with high performance in all categories. he got stars in manners/professionalism and Patient note.

He got this because he acted like it was a real life encounter.

@mpz013: I was so tiered as i was appproching the end of the test.. when i was taking the history following the usual relavent mneumonic my mind blocked and i was lost. So i had to jump between PMH, Menstrual Hx and other parts to avoid total freeze infront of the patient. I had reported that incedent cuz i felt that's inapropriate by an SP to do that, this is a world wide prestigous exam board.

Hey..I was browsing the forum and I came across another person's score report. That person did excellent in data gathering (and others, but especially in data gathering). So, there was only one star on the performance table for that person for data gathering which was all the way on to the right. Basically, the exact opposite of yours. I have also seen another score report where a person had a similar score report as yours for data gathering.

Are you asking for a revision of your score?

@ merrily: yea cuz i think i followed what any one who had read FA would do and ask to an SP and made it thru the test... I thought about asking irrelevent Q's but how come its a general approach thru a mneumonic, more over they had mentioned that their is no negative marking, meaning that their is no order in history taking... I did Resp, Cardio and Abd exam in all, never missed counciling and managment with any case...

Do you mind showing me those reports you were talking about???

Hmmph. Yeah.

Sorry dude, I don't remember where I've seen them. It was a while ago. But if I come across them, I'll bring it to your attention.
