Smile drZoe CS experience

Hi dear members,

I passed my cs today with high performance. Would like to share a bit about how to prep since I could not have done it without some of the people here!

Study materials: FA, CSEvid and UW cases, Neeraj Notes, Khalil high yield and guuureat study partners!
Time: 1 month

Start by practicing the FA cases with a sp. Plan to finish all 40 cases in 7-10 days. (5 cases/day) The way to do it plan for sp to do even cases and you do the odd numbers then switch! During this time try to finish hx alone by 13 mins. (Dont worry you will pick up speed ~10 mins towards end of ur prep)

I watched the corresponding CSEvid after the FA cases. It usually helps in how to approach patient and introduce yourself. Note: Try to get used to knocking door>introducing yourself+explain what you will be doing>ask if the pt is comfortable> drape patient! This should be of second nature to you! (Use the same words on introducing yourself everytime)

Practice FA cases with mnemonics! It really helps jotting down OPDSFC AAA/LIQRAAA before entering the room along with other mnemonics that pertain to the history. (eg: neuro/memo loss use FORGET HIM-forgetful/orthopnea/running urine/gait/ear pain/trauma/headache/infections/medication). Try to come up with your own if you can. Its v imp to jot down menumonics and DDX before entering the room. Since this will help you ask relevant questions. At the end of the hx summarize what the pt told u and ask him: would u like to add anything else? Then ask if you could perform PE...

It's all about practice! as soon as u are done with FA cases (both even and odd number cases done) its time to practice with a live sp or someone who took the test. It's crucial to prefect the timing by now (which includes doing an actual PE) try to finish hx+pe by 13 mins max.

During PE, always remember to wash ur hands first then do a focused exam related to the main complaint. NOTE: do not waste ur time doing a full physical. Its pointless! Do not forget to do MMSE on certain cases like Parkinsons..etc. And try to explain to the patient what you are doing. Avoid examining the painful areas (eg: swollen knee or ankles) just examine the area away from the pain. PE shouldnt take more than 3 mins!

Finally, COUNSELLING! If you are running out of time and still in PE then just wrap it up and do straight to counselling since its more imp! I usually counselled patients during hx taking (eg if smoker/alcoholic/drugs) to avoid missing it out in the end. Summarize your findings, give 2-3 ddx and 2-3 work ups. Explaining medical workup in layman language. Provide support if needed. And if suspecting abuse offer counselling/social worker help..etc. Thank the patient and leave the room.

Patient note is fairly easy if you are a fast writer. FA formats are great to learn from. Focus on abbreviations since that helps save you time.

THE END

Hope this helps! Don't be discouraged, this exam is easy compared to the other steps. Try to be focused and relaxed.

All the best!

Thank you so much!
You can click on the hyperlink listed above in my post, it will direct you to the download link. It's a very useful resource! Make sure you read it and go over the pediatric scenarios that are mentioned there (they are considered high yield..). It will guide you through introduction, hx taking and PE.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Goodluck!

Thanks Rosaly, Glad I could be of help. You can follow the CSEvid format, but to be on the safe side just read over the neeraj peads questions/counselling too. I felt it helped me a lot in my exam.
