Wink CS tips and tricks, Passed with High Performance

Hello everyone.. im done with the clinical skills exam. Its a pretty easy and straight forward exam. preparation should take about 7- 14 days. if you can talk to people understand what they are trying to tell you and actually listen to them, passing this exam should be no big deal.
Having said that, i can understand the anxiety before taking CS. This is a test where there is not much to gain, but there is a lot to lose.
Anyways, the only book you need to pass is FIRST AID. first aid = "rock god". Read through first aid in 3-5 days, most cases in the actual exam will resemble or will have the SAME case scenarios given in the book. Next start practicing all the cases with someone who is also taking the test close to your test date. Watch CSE videos, they are not bad and will give you an idea as to how to approach the patient and it gives you a mental image of the exam room, Draping, hand-washing, pulling the leg rest, dimming the lights and examination techniques. And the thing about patient note, there is no hard and fast rule as to how to write the note. There are two methods mentioned in the USMLE website, bullet style and paragraphs. Make up your mind and stick with it. i personally prefer the paragraph style.

Few more tips:

-dont get lost with the random details you sometimes read over the internet such as :
*should i wash or wear gloves?- i wore gloves for first 2 patients, then washed for the rest because i thought it was more comfortable.

*should i use my last name or first name?- doesn't matter as long as you use the last name of patient for sure.

*should i close the tap with a paper towel after washing? - may be,i did not do it.

*should i warm my stethoscope before auscultating ? - preferably. not an absolute necessity.

*should i take the postural hypo-tension in diabetic patients? no you wont have time, write it as the first investigation.

*do i have to do fundoscopy in all hypertensive/diabetic patients? - preferable, but i dint do it.would have done it , if it was a case of diabetic / hypertensive for follow up.
The list is kind of never ending, but i hope you get the point . These minute things are not as big a deal as they are made out to be.CS is not an exam testing the perfection of the medical student.it is more like a test which is concerned with the capability to follow a particular pattern of questioning and examination, which hopefully should prevent missing out on the diagnosis.

- always counsel. period.

- please stop paying attention to the stories of people who did everything right and still failed the exam. it will do you no good. Maybe, "it was just not their time"

- Eat a good breakfast. stay confident. Please don't make the exam bigger than what it actually is. its an easy exam and you need to get yourself to believe this truth.

oh BTW i Passed - High performance on all fields

Cheers!!
