Hammer and Otoscope Examination of tender area in the CS Exam!

Hi all:

When patients are in pain, to avoid the pain, so we start from the area away from the pain. But do we need to elicit the pain or touch the area in pain in the end? or we just leave that area and assume patients are really in pain?

I think we should still touch the area in pain in the end, right?

Yes. Do it. But be very gentle and do not insist or take long time examining the tender area.

In the case of painful joints, sometimes the SP will refuse to move the joint at all and will act that it's really really very painful, in that case you may skip the exam and mention in the Patient Note that movement of the joint was not possible because of extreme tenderness.
