Computer Patient Note character count

So the character count allowed for the HPI is 950. Does that include the spaces between lines? Because the sample one on the usmle website, whenever I press "enter" between PMH and FH, it takes up like 10 characters.

This is really strange, you are right, when you push ENTER it takes up many characters.

If this is the case in the real exam then I suggest you use enter for each new main entry and if you then encounter problem with characters, just go back on the enter spaces and make them just a space (not Enter), just a space and don't make it new paragraph.

Yes. That's what I meant.

Default Line Limit

There is a character limit as well as a Line limit. I think the line limit has to do with when they print it out they can fit your whole report on one page. So that's the reason when you hit enter the line jumps! I agree with you though that is annoying!

This is terrible... I keep trying and it's so hard. I mean what do they expect us to do.

HPI: asdkadfasdfsadf ROS: dfsldfjaskdfjasldf Allergies: sdfasdfasdf Medications: adfasdf

I think this looks messier than the old way.

HPI:
ROS:
Allergies:

This is more legible...

I hope someone that takes the test in the next few days can tell us if the computers are like this at the centers.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Were you able to add another line for like ROS, meds, allergies, PMH etc without taking up characters?

I did it like this...

HPI:
ROS Allergies: Medications:
PMH: PSH: Obs: If there was any
FH: SH:

Then in PE:
Patient is in NAd. VS:
HEENT: Neck:
Chest CV: Abd:
Neuro:

I had space in every note...

Default usmle.org Patient Note

It is very difficult and annoying to practice the Patient Note on the usmle.org (official website).

Will it be like this on the real exam?
