Cool My Step 2 CS Experience (Passed)

I realize the rules have changed somewhat since I've done my exam. I did the CS exam in July, 2011 (wow!! it's been a year already), and it was challenging and yet enjoyable at the same time.

I chose Los Angeles since I have a friend who lives there. I arrived a couple of days before my scheduled exam and stayed in a hotel next to the test center.

For my preparation I used First Aid for the Step 2 CS. It took me about 2 weeks to go through the cases in the book with my brother who was my simulated patient, but I had college work at the time as well. I guess if you are free, you can get them done in a week.

It's all about practice. There are things you have to do with every patient encounter...just memorize them and keep practicing them until it becomes second nature.

Some of the things I remember are:
1- Smile and greet the patient in a friendly tone.
2- Ask open-ended questions first then narrow it down.
3- Facilitate information flow with verbal and non-verbal cues.
4- Ask if patient has any questions once your done with the history.
5- WASH YOUR HANDS before starting the physical exam.
6- Use the DRAPE.
7- Explain what you're doing as you do it.
8- Keep it short and simple. I know some of us IMG's practice physical examination down to the insignificant details. Don't do that in the CS... you'll waste time.
9- Explain to the patient what you think is going on, what you're plan is and say goodbye.

Time is an issue if you don't keep it simple and practice. You can't time yourself when you're with the patient (they don't allow wrist watches) so if you haven't practiced enough, time will finish and you won't.

Regarding the actual test day, at first I was a little anxious, but once you get through your first case and write the patient note you gain more confidence and then it just follows until the break. As far as I remember, we did 7 cases then we had a break then we came back for the final 5.

Once you're back from the break you'll feel a bit tired (especially if you eat a lot), but keep pushing through and time will fly by. There are many cases that are vague and you might not feel confident with your differential list but don't let that affect your performance with the next patient. Once you leave the room, reset your brain and go in again with a fresh face.

I got my score report in 6-8 weeks (I can't really remember).

Hope that helps,
