Sphygmomanometer Blood Pressure Measurement in Both Arms!

Hi all,
One of the cases in FA discussed a pt with high BP and possible MI.
Under the physical examination, they ask whether we checked the blood pressure in both arms. But are we really supposed to do that in the real exam? I mean, that would take a loooong time to do?

Thumbs Up Good one.

Hey good question!

First of all... Yes, that is expected of you bcoz thats a case of chest pain and your differentials will vary depending on your findings in an actual scenario.

Second... Even if u check the BP in both arms thats not what you will put down on the PN. And yes, it will take a looonggg time just to do that one thing. So IF u have time do it. Keep it for the last. IF not, its okay to skip it. You wont fail the entire exam just coz you didnt do that one test.

Rather miss out on doing that one thing than miss out on several others. So plan accordingly. If time permits do it. If not skip that n do the others.

Hope that answers your question.

Agree with Pectoralis.

I want to add that in my entire time watching this issue (last 5 years) I am yet to see a candidate measuring the blood pressure in the CS exam.

So don't do it. Just follow the blood pressure reading printed on the doorway.

Also this exact issue was discussed before here
