Smile High performance pass!

Hello,
I passed CS with high performance in all 3 subcomponents.
Initially I was not thinking about posting my exam experience and result, but now I feel may be my difficult experience will help someone. I prepared for 1 month (with lots of interruptions), mainly using First Aid for CS and some of the CS notes my friend gave me. Live practice is the key for this exam. I was well prepared for this exam and was confident about my preparation. The only problem was will I be able to sleep the night before exam? I had the same experience during my step 2 ck where I could not sleep the night before exam and my scores came down by 14 points in real exam from what was predicted in UWSA for ck. I lived for one month in a hotel without finding roommate(drained a lot of parents money and felt bad). My worst nightmare became reality when again I was unable to sleep whole night before my exam. I also took sleep aid pill, but it only made me drowsy without making me sleep. It was hard and difficult situation. I could not sleep whole night( not even a single minute) and at 6 AM called my parents back home that I am cancelling the exam because of lack of sleep. Lots of money was already wasted(hotel, food, exam fee). I was told to make my own decision and do what I feel is best. Finally I took the gamble and decided to give exam. I knew chances of failure are more but took a chance. I knew coffee might help me stay awake. Thanks to the hotel receptionist( I would call her angel). She was the one who not only gave me coffee to drink but also gave additional coffee in a bottle so I could drink during the exam breaks. I was still not 100% sure to give exam or cancel it and kept discussing it with friends of my limited options . I could see the failure but still went for exam. I was so sleepy during the exam that even during orientation video I wanted to close my eyes and sleep(did close eyes and then suddenly woke up within few seconds). Kept drinking coffee but then one has to go to washroom again and again to empty bladder and I was scared that it might cause problems during patient interaction as there are only breaks after 5th and 9th encounters. It was worst situation for me. I kept taking sips of coffee till first patient encounter started. I could see all hard work and money going wasted.
1st encounter:Came out on time and after typing patient note felt that may be I can pass?
2-5 encounters: Came out on time and finished almost all patient notes on time. I was worried that is it me not making mistakes or just that I dont remember mistakes because of lack of sleep.
Break: Again drank coffee and some chicken(As I could not eat breakfast in the morning out of stress and got worried that I may vomit if I keep drinking coffee). Everyone looked so active, talking, chatting, laughing. I wanted to sleep but took sips of coffee. I was feeling like experiencing worst nightmare. I used restroom before next encounter.
6-9: Finished on time and really started feeling may be I can make it!
Break: Some students looked sad but most joking and laughing. I wanted to sleep but kept drinking coffee.
10-12: Finished on time and came out thinking which part will I fail?
Came back to hotel, felt like crying and did(Usually I am very strong) . I felt my all hard work went into dustbin like CK. This whole month was full of distress. Waiting for result and thinking which part will I fail(because of lack of sleep) was depressing. I could not find much mistakes but thought may be because of lack of sleep I did not realize my mistakes 10 minutes before result, I called my parents again telling them that I am scared I will fail and almost cried(feel bad for my parents now.lol). After 10 minutes got email that my result is available, but ECFMG website was slow and not opening. Then came the time when it said you have met all requirements for ECFMG certification and all this worst nightmare ended after looking at result with pass and high performance in all.
I know I could have done better with sleep but I am happy that I passed in spite of all this. I was in worst situation and I took a risk which ended well. I wish everyone good luck for this exam and whole USMLE journey. I will be starting step 3 preparation now and will be happy to help someone regarding CS.

congrats on passing and what an experience. I have a couple of questions:
1) were all the cases you encountered in FA?
2) how can one gain the empathy points?

Thanks.

@ifss
Thanks buddy.
1) Most of the cases are from first aid. You will find some which are not in FA but you can do it well if you have read and done all FA long and mini cases. Practice is the key!
2)For empathy, I would take SP as real patient. Facial expressions combined with words like I am really sorry, understanding patients expressions and responding to them with reassurances all help.
Good luck!

@aaru20
Thanks.
1) I only wrote 2 diagnostic workup in 1 PN and time ended.
2) One patient said doctor you are not understanding me and I was like > I was scared that may be because of lack of sleep I am doing something wrong but now I think may be she was checking my tolerance level
The problem is I was unable to recount my mistakes and that was scary.
3) One patient corrected me for duration( I felt like she told me wrong first time and then corrected. lol)
4) One patient could not understand one question. Then I had to explain and she answered later.
These are mistakes I could remember.

@shima.
Reassurance means that patient is worried about something and you assure him/her that you are there for him/her and you will do your best to address that particular concern and how you can/will do it. There are different ways to do that. I cannot give you example from my real exam but I hope you got the idea
