Default CS before CK Warning

Its been about a month since my Step 2 CS, and I have a month left until results come out. Just a heads up for everyone having taken it recently, you remember more and more errors that you made as time goes by. This is especially true if you are taking Step 2 CS before Step 2 CK. In hindsight, I think I made an error in doing this. Every couple of pages makes me realize that I missed important questions to ask, or important tests in the work up, or flawed differentials even.

I know others say that doing Step 2 CS before CK is no big deal, but if you are an IMG, I believe it is a risk. To provide you an example, here are the major errors I made on my exam:

ICE errors:
- 2 patients completely missing the most likely diagnosis
- 4 patients with incorrect secondary diagnosis (primary is correct)
- 2 lightheaded patients missing ENTIRE Neuro exams
- 1 diabetic missing diabetic exam (sensory, fundoscopy)
- insufficient workup for 3 patients
- 1 patient missing huge physical exam maneuver

CIS errors:
-2 patients missing counseling on dangerous things they were doing.
-3 fumbled challenge questions. I was pausing/stuttering and had unclear answers.

I will most likely fail in ICE. Had I taken CK before CS, I believe I would have made far fewer errors. 40% of IMGs will fail this year, and the cut-off is simply too high now to mess around with this exam. I recommend doing CK before CS. Good luck everyone.

Where did you read that 40% of IMGs will fail this year? What where the changes that caused it?

Hey there is no such thing...I took CS before CK ..and felt like the same while reading for CK ..i thought I have made blunders. But Tht you would have done otherwise too.. It's a very erratic exam. sometimes when people think they have done perfectly..they are surprised by a bad outcome.
Most of my friends took this exam ..even before step 1 and passed ..and i know a lot of ppl who took after ck failed.

It's all on that one single day. Good luck to all

i think you are worrying too much..i told you how horrible my exam was but still all i can do right now is hope that i will be able to pass..a higher performance pass or borderline pass doesnt matter much in CS..and those who take the exam thinking that they did everything perfectly also fail but that doesnt mean it was because of 1 or two mistakes, they failed because they failed to do a lot of essential things and then forgot about the exam as a whole..what i have heard from people who have passed, you can still pass if have screwed up upto 4 cases..
btw i have my ck in august end and i am going to get the CS result on august 14 most likely..but i wont see the result until am done with ck..
forget about that exam buddy..even if u had done CK first, those mistakes still would have happened due to anxiety..for us IMG's the hardest part i believe is to communicate nicely with the patients along with thinking about the case and PE at the back of our mind..

That is on the USMLE website, because they increased the passing score for both ICE and CIS they said that a LOT of IMG's that have taken the exam would fail, something like 78% of IMG's passed the exam on the first attempt BEFORE the change, if those IMG's would have taken the exam after that change, there would be an increase in failure rates of 18% for IMG's and 4% AMG's (they would drop from 98% to 94%).

Bottom line: 60% IMG's will pass and 40% will fail AFTER the change. There is a thread somewhere around here that explains all of that.

I honestly think if you are done with med school in a different country, you should be able to come up with these differentials and it should not be an issue if you take CS before CK.
Maybe if you have two more years in school, I'd say take CK first, that certainly helps. But I don't understand why IMGs would have to do CK first. the cases in CS are very straightforward.
Having said that, I think everyone should decide for themselves and mainly have it depend on timing of your application. If you need your results to be available soon, take CS first .

If you are an old IMG, it might not hurt you too much if you have a lot of clinical practice in your country. I am still a student. I took the CS at the very end of M3, in order to try and have the score ready for the Match this year.

Taking CS without fully having learned CK material is a risk. There are differentials on your exam that are not in FA.

same situation man.. I want to apply this year badly. But im highly dependent on CK scores..cuz mine step 1 wasn't great. Passed CS and done with electives too. All i need is to get done with CK ..but i need high scores.
