Arrow Doctor Ali's Getting Ready for the CS

Hello guys and girls,

I registered for Step 2 cs and now looking for a date as soon as possible. My materials are FA 4th ed and Kaplan 2013 core cases. I also would like to buy and have videos along side because I actually do learn from the videos; example, pathoma videos.

That be said, I would like to know which is effective: UW videos or CSE videos?

Yes I did look throughout the forums and apparently, there was so much heated in that tread. And there were members in there that got banned too. Also, those were March and April 2013. I would like a more update/recent posts.

Also, I read people's experiences and notice that most people tend to go to Houston; even recently. What's the real story over there? I know it's bit of funny and I just want to know. Do you guys get more help from SP by saying "Is there anything else you like to tell me?" in Houston?

Barely anyone went to LA. What's up with that?

I hope someone enlightens up, guide me, and help me so that I can accomplish this goal neatly.

Thank you for your support!!

For those who want the date sooner as possible, you can download check4change if you have firefox. Its working nicely.

I am still waiting about the videos. Which is effective: UW videos or CSE videos? And why more going to Houston?

Frankly, CSE videos aren't that professional and well-executed. You can just watch a few of them (you can find samples online) just to get a bit oriented. They help you in getting organized. But FA does that too, and you can make your own plan of action.

UW videos, on the other hand, have ONLY PHYSICAL EXAM videos, with 2 clinical encounter videos. You can find tons of free physical exam videos on youtube. Apart from that, the cases are like that of FA. UW does have a good PN note typing format. Thats the only thing I found useful from UW actually.

As for why people go to Houston. Its a trend. Its an IMG place, like New york. And many students from Kaplan and other courses are in Houston. So, naturally, after doing thier courses, they follow it up with CS in Houston. Its not that the SP's are easier or they will help you out in Houston. As I mentioned earlier, SP's are very professional. They dont break their character to help you out. No way! All the SP's throughout the 5 centers in US are standardized, and they are made so as to behave the same in every state. So, dont go for that bullcrap that SP's are harder in Chicago or Philly. They are not. They all have the same guidelines, the same trainers, the same rules.!

Hope that helps!

No no no, I wasn't looking for SP to give me an easy pass and I am done. I know that hard work is required to earn a passing grade. I was just curious that most people went to Houston and came out passing. I was reading every one's experiences that I can find on this forum. Bottom of line is simple, hard work equals success. No free ride.

Anyways, I got my date and its on around the Christmas at LA. I hope that it's friendly place. And not a scary environment. Because I don't want to fail. That's why I was curious about Houston, maybe SP (Professional) don't give a such a hard time and allows you to get your job done. I was not interested in easy passing and allowing SP to give me all easy pass.

Again to get a date as soon as possible, you can download check4change. It works very nicely. All you have to do is log into ecfmg and open five of those since there are five centers. Pick the month that you want in every center. Highlight the dates. Right click, point to check4change, and click on every 30 seconds. Then click okay to start. Once started, relax, and it do its job. When there will be change (Open date/seat), it will let you know and you click your date and you are set to go!! But make sure that you are quick enough to get it because other people will do the same and might grab it before you.

As far as videos, because I am visual learner, I am still deciding. Interesting, I found one more video company called step2cs.net. So now I got 3 videos to choose from:

1 CSE
2 UW
3 step2cs.net

Any suggestions are welcome!!!!!!

CSE is way better in my opinion. I tried something else but wasn't as satisfied as I am with csevideos. They have more substance at least for me right now.

Good luck.

I don't know anything Chicago. I am heading to LA, since I got the date in December. No other centers were open. I use check4change method and it works pretty well.

For the videos, I am using CSE and UW. UW also sample cases and regular cases that are printable and their PN notes are very good. They are also printable. CSE has PN notes too and are printable as well. It's good because the more you practice, the better it will be!

UW has a lot of practice Sample PN. They are also printable too. The way I am doing it is printing all of those, and go to usmle.org, go on their templet, and start practicing typing there. UW also has it too.

I also found that UW has the questions that you should be asking in a particular chief of complain. Basically, UW has dialogues for every conversation for every topic including HPI, PMH, Med/Allergie, and so forth. After each case, there's sample PN. All those are printable. I found those easier than FA practice questions; perhaps UW is more organized than FA.
I will use FA cases by using UW dialogues (questions).

Hey guys and girls,

I want to make somethings clear.

1. When you ask: "Do you have any allergies?" and the SP says "No", do you still mention about allergy to Medications, food, pets, plants, and environmental sources? Or you just skip all those after SP said no.

2. When you ask: "Are you taking any medications?" and the SP says "No", do you still mention about OTC, Vitamins, and herbs? Or you just skip all those after SP said no.

3. When you ask: "Have you ever had any major illness?" and the SP says "No", do you still mention about High blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol? Or you just skip all those after SP said no.

4. When you ask: "How often does it happen?" which is frequency question and part of the onset question; do you still ask: "Have you ever had this before?" which is part of PMH.

Thanks!!!

For FA long cases and kaplan core cases, I have decided to rewrite everything by using dialogues and introduction, and so forth. For example, case 1 in FA is abdominal pain. I will write the patient's name and her vital signs. Then I will write my introduction dialogue. Then for every answer that is in that case, I'll create and write questions for those answers provided. I will also include empathy, and translation dialogues where it is needed. All of these I am going to documented in my notebook.

What you think?

I have decided that I am going to postpone my cs exam to Oct. 2014. I know it sucks but I am really not confidence about. I will just shift my gears towards to ck. Take that and then go to rotation(s). Then I will do CS. That way, I will get my DDx right, know how to be in a certain way during rotation(s), and I will build enough confidence to take this CS.

The latest edition of FA is old due to they change the exam and will wait for the new one. CS is, in my opinion, unpredictable and cost lot of money including flights/hotel. This is one shot and they are not helping us about what to do and how they want us to do it. That's what I feel. There are people who feel comfortable in writing because they happen to write neat and fast. By same token, there are people who feel comfortable in typing because that's how they are. That been said, they shouldn't removed the writing option away from it. Again, that's what I feel. The timing should be 30 minutes including PN. That would be 15 min patient interacting and 15 min PN. It's just my opinion.

Any how, I am chasing for ck right now.
