@usmlethree Thanks for the prompt reply.here's my dilemma. I have not yet read for CK. Started reading for CS a week back and have finished with the basic history and physical examination bit from FA and UW. Exam on May 15. Wanted to do this live course to get acquainted with SPs. I am worried about whether with 5 day course duration plus 2 days of travel, will I get enough time to practice the mini cases and practical cases on my own?
Thats the main concern. and point in favor of 3 day goldusmle review course. What do u say?

I have decided Kaplan is too expensive for me . I have been going through lots of CS threads. it seems with good study partners, I can avoid these live courses altogether. Will go ahead with this plan.

I was in the same position as you several months ago. Wanting to go to live prep, but the fees are too steep for my budget. I finally decided to not go with it and thank God, even with only skype SP and lay man live SP, I passed with high performance.

You're absolutely right, as long as you are committed and you can find a committed partner even a skype SP will do you tremendous help. Read useful threads from previous exam takers, you will learn a lot of tips. And don't be hesitant to reach out to those who have cleared their CS exam. I pm'ed successful exam takers and some were very helpful.

My suggestion for practicing be it live SP or skype SP:
1. Ask your SP to be honest in reviewing your performance. In what ways are you lacking and how ask them for suggestions how to improve it.

2. Always do PN even when you are the SP then compare results. Learn from each others mistakes and strengths.

3. For Skype SP, do everything as if you are practicing with live SP.
Eg: mimic shaking hands, untying and tying back gowns, pulling the leg rest, helping patient to sit, actually doing the phys exam - do pulm auscultation in 6 aus points instead of just saying "I will check your lungs". That way you'll get used to the motion and you can have better time prediction.

4. For later stage of practice, do several consecutive cases to mimic exam situation. It will train you to focus even if you have screwed up previous encounter. I did 4 cases consecutively as examinee and my partner likewise during the last 2 weeks of practice.

5. Do practice as difficult/angry/hesitant SP. This will help you to be at ease in your exam with angry SPs.

Last most important tips for exam day: You will screw up one of the cases. It's normal. If you do, do NOT panic. Just do quick evaluation on what you did not do and SET OUT to correct it in next encounters. That way you will improve with each encounters. Do not even worry how you score until after your exam is done.

Best of luck!
