I joined Gold usmle review at Houston. It was good! Those SP were well trained and they gave you more difficult cases than the real deal.

I took gold usmle review in New york in august 8-10th 2014 and given exam on 19th August 2014. Passed in first attempt. Before joining this course I just read few mini cases from First Aid rest all I did in this course and after that till exam day. This course is really good. They gave us number of useful tips for ICE and taught us targeted physical exam. Their mock exam is really good with trained SPs, who corrected us and pointed out our weaknesses and strengths too, which helped a lot. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

hey, so full disclosure before i give my opinion...Ive never taken a live class before for any of my steps. I did take kaplan for my SATs back in high school and ill be honest, i felt like it ws too generic for me. That being said, I only joined this course because I freaked out finding out that alot of my 260+ friends were failing their cs. I know its expensive ($1000 -which is def cheaper than kaplan ...im not really sure about the other ones). So yeah, i took this one b/c it was closest to me. Heres my real subjective opinion with facts to back it up.

1. Its about ten kids in one class. So pretty personalized. The first day Dr Azzerad spends about an hour telling you about the basics of the test (which kind of worked in my favor cuz i hadnt really looked at FA yet ) Then the next hour is honestly the most crucial thing that changes the way you see this test. The way he changes your strategy and focus on the test is amazing. The course IS NOT for anyone who wants to only learn theory (d/d, investigations). That stuff is given in FA in my opinion and should be learned as such (with the few good exceptions they gave me For ex: Dizziness being a broad diagnosis, they broke it down so i knew how to handle that case in the first minute of my history- because lets be real- You can NOT do a neuro and cvs and whatever else examination in 5 minutes to find out the cause of dizziness). It was ironic for me, because just this past month my gramps had dizziness (hes 91) and his ER doc asked the EXACT same questions right in the beginning and directed the rest of the questions (to cardio in my grandpa's case---but of course they ran tests for everything ).

Getting back to the point, The next two hours before lunch are spent teaching you proper etiquette, entry, intro, blue sheet organization (way better than the youtube videos i tried to use- which in themselves arent too shabby but def NOT enough). I guess what this course did for me on the first day was really get me to know WHAt to ask, when to ask, HOW to ask it, and how to not freak out because of the limited timings. Lets be real, as a US IMG im not too worried about the CIS part, as im sure most people in my situation aren't. But I started hearing about my friends failing the ICE portion and after the first day, I could see why. I mean who can really write down the patient information, take a history , juggle what the patient is saying, deal with their damn challenges (which DEF are not just the routine " do i have cancer") and try and think of the questions to wanna ask to get those DATA gathering points. I think Dr. Azzerad really organizes it for you so you dont have to juggle and he makes the entire process so systematic, no matter what crazy case they throw at you.

Sorry if this is getting way too long, just wanted to put this info out there, cuz i really feel like these docs at goldusmle put their hearts out and still message me to ask how my studying is going, if i have any questions, and remind me to come in any time , ask questions, and use their 15 exam rooms to my leisure to practice for free. Who does that.. Kaplan wouldnt even give me access to their library while i was still taking their SAT classes -_- .

Getting back to the topic again, the second day from 8:30 A.M. till about 8 P.M. is spent doing examinations, All of them ,OVER and OVER again. I def feel like Dr . Farooqi has a point in everything he says about examination. And you see it. I didnt find myself fidgeting around the room, or bumping into anything (i still kept dropping my pen but that was on me) , or wasting time changing sides or figuring out the drapes. Everyone was like a mini drone in the examination part. and you actually finish your exam IN the right amount of time (he explains the timings for each ) even when you practice it the first time. Cuz he does it in such a way where everything just flows, from one movement to the next.. and im talking one DTR to the next too. Hes got a point in making the examination look so effortless, and ive honest to god, NEVER seen someone do that or teach me that.

Third day is Patient note (Jorge - i hope im spelling it right-- is a Fantastic guy- really lightens up the mood and gives you little tips and tricks to make sure you finish it on time and if not, that you have the **** down that gives you the most points first). And after that you have a mock test. 12 cases, REAL AS ****. honestly, they are tough, and you find yourself in situations that DEF are not in FA, like real psych doctors (playing SPs) AS a psych patient- You better believe they know what you should be doing. After each case you type patient note (which they fix for you as you go on to your next case) and THE FEEDBACk. so friggin helpful. And you'll see yourself change and improve after every encounter - adding the little things you got to do in the last one. Every SP (10/12 were doctors and i think like 6/12 were recent ECFMG certified doctors- who give you equivalents of real scenarios they had or friends have had ---of course not the same ones -but they are tough and take all your energy to answer their challenges )

Last thing im going to say is: I joined this program mainly because i didnt wanna take a chance thinking i was ready for the cs with a study partner (just as inexperienced as me) and first aid. I didnt bank on anything but practice questions for my other tests, and the cs is just as important. Lets be honest, as IMGs ...if you cant vocalize your questions clearly and concisely and form a really well flowing examination, its going to carry through residency, and you dont want to feel inferior. Its only a $1000, and yeah money is an issue for me, but not at the cost of building my basics as a physician.

So to all those skeptics, here were your details about the course. I can actually promise, you wont regret it (i would say to sign up for a class three weeks before your real test if you speak english well...if not ...let them tell you when to take the test, how many hours of studying you need everyday after the mock test, and what exactly to work on, i think they even hook u up with tutors for like ten bucks an hour to focus on your weak points). So yeah, heres my two cents on a class that im really glad i took.

I am about to register for this course,
I was calling to NY number posted on the web site and they gave me an e-mail that is different from what is posted on the web site and the guy told me that they started 10 month ago. I am bit concerned if this is the one,
Also the name of the course is Step 2 CS long Island, not goldeUSMLEreview

Could you please comment on these.

Thanks

J

Went through the Golds Live course a couple of years ago in Houston and although intense was well worth the higher scores.

I had a friend take Gold recently in NY and failed... He told me that they didn't cover as many cases as promised and that the sp's weren't like the ones he experience on the exam.

Default No need to take classes

no need to take any classes if you know the physical examination part.first aid is enough if u do it with live study partner /skype.even if you want to take then take it for only 2 days.4 days is waste of money.i took gold for 4 days.and from my experience 2 days enough.

i ended up taking gold usmle after trying to read from first aid and doing skype partner. nothing beats doing cases in real time. was best investment i made. i took 3 day course and the instructor graded my practice patient notes for free up until my exam. thanks so much to their program. it was so close to real exam center in Houston.
