Question Chicken Pox Case Question

A 63-year-old man with multiple myeloma and asthma that requires chronic corticosteroid therapy is hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia. On the second hospital day, his 4-year-old grandson visits. The morning after the visit, the grandson develops a rash that is diagnosed as chickenpox. Your patient believes that he had chickenpox as a child and remained well when his three children developed this infection. His hospital course is uneventful, and he is ready for discharge.
Which of the following prophylactic measures is most appropriate at this time?
( A ) Your patient should receive intravenous acyclovir at a maximum dosage
( B ) Your patientís corticosteroid dose should be rapidly tapered and discontinued
( C ) Your patient should receive varicella-zoster immune globulin
( D ) All patients on the same floor as your patient should receive varicella-zoster immune globulin
( E ) All nonimmune staff who had face-to-face contact with the grandson should be furloughed or excused from patient contact from day 8 to day 21 after the exposure
