Default December-February Step 3 Test Takers Group

Hello everyone!

Many of us have begun to prepare for Step 3 after having applied to programs in September. I created this thread with a goal of us sharing questions that may come up and discussing them, as well as any misunderstandings. This thread is not strictly for those taking the exam in Dec-Feb. If have not begun to study and are planning to in the future, please feel free to join!

Let's be active on this thread, support each other and keep each other motivated

Good luck!!

Anybody recommends watching Kaplan 2010 videos (Cases) ? Or should I just skip to Qbanks and MTB?

Thank you

I am joining this group. I am currently watching Kaplan IM videos along with the books (cases). But I am buying the Archer CCS workshop ($88) and start studying the approach to the CCS since I did a trial case from USMLE consult and I was kind of lost I am hoping to start doing the UWorld CCS in like 2 weeks or so. I will let you know. Please, share your experiences in this journey. Besides, we have to do banks (Kaplan and UWorld). It seems like a lot,but it's the last of the steps

I will do videos, followed by Kaplan Qbank while reading MTB 3 because I still think that Kaplan is important. Last stage will be UWORLD with MTB3 and Archer Videos.

So far I find Kaplan videos pretty simple, makes me feel like studying for CK all over anyways, its been a while since my CK and the videos are giving me a pretty good review of small things I might have forgotten over these months.

hey guys
I'm actually planning to take the exam a bit later than you, I have a question
how do you fill the CID form if you are outside the states...I mean the "public notary" part, is it just for U.S officials or any country ?

thanks

Hi guys
I'm planning to do Step 3 on mid February so I would have the results before the Match. Compared to the CK, is there any difference with the application/payment/validation process? Or can I just do the whole process a month before doing the test?

Default step 3 prep

Hello everyone,

I am about to start my Step 3 prep since i have now applied for residency and am now in the process of doing Interviews: Iv been researching and looking at all these blogs to fig out the best method of studying for step 3: I had some queries-
1) when people say Archer: are they saying to start the whole $88 archer pay-per-view series AFTER we've done the theory from MTB 2 n 3?
2) in what order should we be studying: from what i could gather this was the step by step for step 3: confirmation please!
-----1st do MTB 2&3
-----then do Archer videos
-----then do uworld CCS
-----then do uworld qbank/kaplan qbank
* and obviously all the while refreshing theory from MTBs during Q review??

You will need to register before you can pick the window period, as for the dates, i think its the same as for previous usmle's, but to be honest i am not sure. Also, you have to apply on a different website, and as long as you have your ECFMG certification, you are good to go!
here's the link to the website: http://www.fsmb.org/medical-professionals/usmle-step-3/

1) By Archer, I think they mean the one you are referring to. Personally I think its the best deal they got for a month with 40 hrs playback time - which means you dont really have to rush yourself.
2) The plan seems legit. Pretty much I am doing the same plan of study, except I am not touching MTB 2 and I've decided to include Kaplan videos and Q's (x1) during my first read of MTB 3 (about 1-1.5 months). Also, a friend of mine advised me that its important to get used to the CCS interface on UWORLD (because its quite similar to the one on the exam) and work with it from early on, so for the other 1-2months, I am planning to do CCS UWORLD morning and evening, and during the day read MTB3 and do UWORLD Q's.

If i understood your question correctly, then the notary in your country has to fill that part out. This may require her translating the document, then legalizing the translation and then signing it. I had to go through this when I was applying for the Canadian MCCEE exam.

Hey guys,

I am planning on taking Step 3 by March. I have yet to start my prep. Just in the process of gathering all the materials. I have all the Step 2 CK materials but I am not sure if I should purchase the Step 3 books yet.

Since there are going to be changes starting November, will there be new books coming out as well? Should I wait for it or just go ahead and get the books listed below?

I had one more question regarding Master the Boards - would you recommend 2nd edition or the 3rd edition? Since 3rd edition came out in 2014, I was thinking of getting this one.

Thanks

I have already started on UW, studying one topic followed by UW questions. Reading only seems to be very difficult at this point of time when you are worried about IV's and stuff. I am also looking for a SP so that we can sync and discuss our progress everyday. Let me know if anyone interested. Best.

Nobody knows about the new material coming out in november to be honest. My best bet would be that they are going to release new material within the next year.

As for MTB, if you are really not in a rush, then wait for the new MTB 3 edition which is coming out December 5th. Personally, I am using MTB 3 only. Its honestly up to you and how comfortable you feel with MTB 2 or 3.

Cheers

people use archer for CCS videos mostly, some do get the qbanks, but i think in that perspective the majority sticks to UWORLD. Personally I havent heard anything about the MTB videos, but I decided to play it safe and stick with Kaplan. If you are going with MTB videos, give us some feedback
as far as for Kaplan, to be honest, I havent learnt anything new yet just review..

Hey No Kaplan at this time. Just focusing on MTB and UWorld for now. And for CCS using Archer along with UWorld. Planning to take it Feb/March. Hoping the changes aren't too radical!

Going to start posting questions I encounter that I find a bit challenging so we can all give our 2 cents.

Default Registration for step 3

Guys, were any of you able to register and pay for the step 3 exam for Feb 2015? When I try to choose the eligibility period, it only shows Nov 2014-Dec2014 window. I cannot see beyond this. Can anyone else confirm if this is what they see?

This should clarify why NOV_DEC is the only eligibility period available so far

In order for scores to be released in April, there must be sufficient number of takers early in the administration of the restructured Step 3. To facilitate this process, the following measures are currently in place:
Eligibility periods will be set for 60 days. For example, the initial 60-day eligibility period will be for November and December only.
November 7, 2014: December - January eligibility period available
December 8, 2014: January - February eligibility period available

Thank you, yes I also saw on FSMB.org about the information posted yesterday. I only hope they process the applications soon enough when people apply in January. Step 3 also requires certified Identification form to be sent physically hence I was little worried whether things would work out on time to get the scheduling permit.

Count me in. I am just gonna start preparing for step 3. In step 2 Ck I studied medicine from mtb 2 and rest of the subjects from mtb 3. Should I just start with revising the same thing or do mtb 3 complete as in medicine also from mtb 3. And I have heard step 3 is a two day exam. What should I prepare for CCS from?

Default Rougjh starting plan

Hey people, lets do it. I dont even have my CS exam yet but will have it in decemebr so will start official registration paper work after that. As I know CT is the easiest state to register. Please if anybody goes through what papers are needed in detail let us know.
I am workign full time so need a plan to stick warming up and plan to be more efficient in January together with externship and full month of February. + what will be needed.

MTB3 Preordered, CCS internal med correlatinos by Fischer Ordered. Will let y know if its worth buying. Also friend ordered OBGYN same correlations book.
Plan so far:
Kaplan Q bank 1 Block daily minimum during novermber. + 2-3 CCS cases with good explanatino and maybe doing it second or couple more times to get used to it.
After I have MTB3 in december I will start doing UWorld 1 block + CCS cases.

DIT STEP 3 By the end of preparation period.

Nothing special I guess just need to organize and find time to study.

Let's do it fellas!
I know its not easy because of uncertainty of match process, but I wish i had more time and study and be fresh for interviews and of course for residency

Wish you all the best

Please any remarks and advises are welcome.

Hello to lot of my friends with whom we have been moving from one subdivision of this forum to another. Successfully!! Wish you all the best!

Let's do it

Default uw qbank

hey guys. started studying for my step 3 and have been using UW qbank roughly 50% done. I have noticed that many of the questions might be new. Once you finish an exam under the % response category many of the questions have N/A. This is in around 50-75% of Q's on blocks.

Wanted to see if it was updated to that extreme? If it has been then it seems the best source at this time is UW qbank. I hope everyone is studying away.

Default UW for step3

Hi fellas.
I am gonna take step3 in feb and i want to start preparation. Although mtb is good tool to start studying but UW is most important material for all usmle tests, so i want to know if current uw is good to study and prepare for new format step3?
Any advice will be appreciated

hey although I have not taken the exam I am half way through UW and possibly the bank has been completely updated. I am sure they have been anticipating this change for a while. So focus your studying on UW at least for now until new material reflecting the new exam comes out.

How many months of subscription did you take? I plan to write in jan end feb 1st week, and just started studying. reading the 2nd edition mtb3 for now.

Default Application question

Hello! I am little confused about the application. The online application has a component Post graduate training. Being a PGY-1 Intern in the US, should i or should I not enter the few months of training that I have had? Or does this mean I have to enter only if I have completed PGT?
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Default Step 3

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to share my experience with you.
I took step 3 on November 3rd and 6th (new format). I studied during one month (part-time) and I used UW (both question bank ad CCS), and my notes for CK (based on MTB2 and 3). The questions from UW are being updated daily, at least by the time I took the exam.
Day 1: during the first day I had a bunch of step1 questions, but easy ones, very straigthforward, no complicated issues. Also, I saw a lot of epidemiology/biostatistics/drug ads/abstracts questions that were tough, and in one block I almost run out of time (even though I have never had any issue with time management)... Bottom line, the questions are longer during th first day.
Day2: Questions seemed easier, just management questions, more similar to UW questions, and I did much better with time (I had at least 5 min left in each block). CCS are very similar to UW cases, so I think this didn't change a lot.

My advise, if you can, take the exam close to Step1 and CK, cause that way you can remember things more easily. If you cant do that, then I would recommend to go quickly through FA for step 1 or if you wrote any notes that would help too. And third, try to have some time left when doing UW, just to make sure you dont run out of time.

If you have any question, feel free to ask. I cant tell exactly how I did until April 2015, all I can say is that I probably passed.

Good luck everyone!

the step 1 questions were they vague one liners or long vignettes? How were the length of the questions.

Did you do any NBMEs/Assessments? I do not hink any of them really reflect the new format of the exam

Also - do you think Usmle World reflected the exam? what did you use for biostats?

thank you for your post on your experience really appreciate it

congrats on finishing!

Thanks!
For biostats I basically used UW and the biostatistics questions that you can buy separately from UW... But as I said, I took CK just a few months ago, so it is still fresh on my memory (fortunately).
The questions from UW were similar to the questions on the 2nd day of the exam. The first day I felt them different, and def longer.
Step 1 questions were like: gram+, catalase+, coagulase-, what bacteria is it? And what's the mec of action of the drug that you would use with X bacteria. Things like that... Or what artery nourish this and that, or runs behind whatever... They were straightforward, not very long, but sometimes the clinical vignette makes you waste time reading unnecesary stuff.

I did the UW self-assesment and the questions are not like the real exam. No NBMEs.

Best of luck!

hey boss, congrats on finishing and thanks for sharing your experience

i'm very surprised to hear step 1 questions like the ones you mentioned about gram-, gram+ and stuff. i do not remember that stuff at all and that does worry me. as far as step 1 material, what was most tested and should i look over again. is it like biochem stuff and microbio and anatomy? i dont remember that stuff at all :/

secondly, how do i study for CCS. just do all the UW CCS cases? they dont give much feedback in the way of telling you what you did wrong, i suppose i just learn their explanations of what should be done and try to do that?

and lastly, i'm basically just doing UW 2-3x, MTB 3 and UW CCS cases. Is that enough to pass you think? I'm in psych so 90% of this exam doesn't apply to my future practice lol, i just need to get it over with. Should I try the UW self-assessment? if i pass that i can be sure i'll pass the real thing?

thank you in advance

Thanks for sharing. Did you do UW subject review for biostatistics ? thats what y are talking about ? ive done it once for CS year ago has it changed if you know? and any ther clues what would be helpful for us from STEP1 would be great. thats what has changed mostly i guess and just heavy load of biostatistics everythign else seems same. Thank you experience is really helpful cause there are not lot experiences form new format Step 3. being fresh from previos exam definitely helps..

Default earliest time to schedule test

I received my CS score just one week ago and now eligible for ECFMG certificate. I contact ECFMG and ask for processing time. They told me that it takes 10 business days to received the certificate. For step 3, I need to enter the certificate date. Would you please drop me some hints about the steps of application? How long it takes? Estimably, what day is the earliest spot? Should I fill the certification of identity form and send it shortly ?

Thanks

I think everyone is lazy to proceed with application steps. so far what i know is we have to send notarized thing and proceed with online application. i am in same boat waiting for my certificate tomorrow.
not sure about eligibility period yet. but will let you know if i have any other news.

Hi folks,

I want to start my preparation for step 3. I need some advice. Sorry for posting my question in this thread ( I am not planning to take exam during Dec-Jan period).
I am planning to start with MTB CK/Step 3 plus New MTB 3 alongside with Kaplan qbank. After Archer plus Uworld. Is it enough?

1. Do I need any extra study material?
2. Which one Archer CCS workshop? There are 4 option ($ 88, 97, 245, 699). Which one should i choose?
3. I read about Kaplan videos in this thread. Are they must have?

Thanks in advance.

I have no motivation whatsoever to open the book. I want to get done with this step 3 in April but I have not yet started studying (just read a chapter or two). Does anyone have anything to inspire me? Sorry for such a lazy post.

I am also planning to get done with the exam by feb end...started with mtb 2 medicine which i found has better details and more topics covered as compared to mtb 3.
Heard the new pattern has lots of bio stats and epidemiology questions. almost 10-15 /block on the first. how are u guys planning on tackling that?

i was thinking of gng thru bio stats n epidemiology from the kaplan ck book itself, its a short read.
did u get the new mtb for step 3 that just came out?
i dunno how much of a difference there is in the new book from the old one?
is it worth spending the money?

I cannot read an old edition when new one is available. i cant even say it is better then CK book or not. I dont rememebr CK book. I baught new book cause its new and im annotating it with uworld. So i wouls recomedn to buy anyways. to stick to one source. obstetrics are much better. other subjects have thing included as always. maybe something are missing here and there but it does not make big difference in big picture. i have CCS cases by yConrad and can give it to you for January if you are in NY

Default order list

Does anybody have a complete list of orders available in FredV2step3 program (original usmle step 3 software). The list of orders in UW CCS software are not same as fred.

there is no official list of Fred orders for CCS available whatsoever.

I don't think there is much of a difference between UW and Fred order system though.

what brings you to that conclusion ?

Usually Step 3 is taken by FMG's (non-US citizens) to get the H1b visas, also to look as a better as a candidate, even in the case of having a low step 1. I feel as though when programs see such candidates, they see them as less hastle to work with. Being a US-IMG gives you advantage over the other FMGs - mostly in terms of visa. Maybe taking step 3 in your case may be just a way to get it done with and forget about it...pretty much like everyone on this thread wants to do

i got a question..
cervix fully dialted if fetal vertex is engaged at 0 station..oxytocin was given to increase the strength of contraction .mother tried pushing for 3 hours without epidural, but still the vertex remained at 0(after correct pushing technique, significant maternal effort, adequate contractions..next step?
a) Vacuum assisted delivery
b) Cs

Hi every one, I am jumping in, want to stay motivated to get step 3 done. I finished extras from mtb3 and started medicine. Goal is to finish mtb3 in 2 more weeks, then will take UW & get going. I am also simultaneously studying IM ccs by conrad Fischer.

I agree with tamta. Vacuum would be used if the station was lower or she was vaginally delivering and the baby started to be in distress therefore needing for a quicker way to deliver.Correct me if I'm wrong. :?

I'm finishing up mtb 3rd time and doing some Kaplan videos along. Will give a read to the premier notes. And by end of February begin uworld qbank and ccs. Is anyone doing archers?

Hi yanichits,

I am reading MTB for a 2nd time, did kaplan qbank once, cumulative 70 %, going to start with Archer and uworld in 2 weeks.
By the way any info about biostatistics? Is Kaplan book for step 1 enough? I have Lippincot 4 edition pdf High yield biostat for step 1 too.

Can anyone tell me....is mtb3 helping with solving UW step 3? I have a few chapters left to read in mtb3 , will that be sufficient to do uw (which I'll start soon) or should I study something else apart from mtb3 to be ready for uw? Thanx.

i heard that the new step 3 format is heavy on biostats and epidemio. I guess step 1 kaplan wouldnt hurt at all, i think i might go back to FA even. I dont know anything about Lippincotts, havent used it before. How does the book seem to you anyway?

Yanichits,

To be honest I haven't started it yet. I will start biostatistics next week, want to combine Kaplan and lippincot. The books looks solid to me. It is in pdf format, if you want I can send it to you.

I spoke once with AMG once during CK preparation. He told that his mentors told everyone in their school just to skip drug ads and abstracts questions. Instead to focus on regular MCQ and not to waste time for drug ads and abstracts.
My CK drug ads and abstracts questions were out of blue, I am sure 100% that I did them wrong and spend a lot of time trying to solve them.
Bottom line: It is better to do well in other areas skipping these WTF questions.
Saying that I am not sure if it would work for step 3.

yea that's what i did for ck..skipped them and did them at last when i had time on my hands(most likely wrong as well),but the number of drug ads on step 3 is very extensive; almost every block has 1-2, can seriously jeopardize the performance

ok so this is confusing me a lot.....
positive predictive value vs poitive likelihood ratio?
any one got a good way to differentiate between them?

pPv changes with prevalence. LR+ does not as its calculated from sensitivity/1-spec. And these dont change with orevalence.

There are lot a lot of qs in uworld and in the end y gonna get it . Likelihood ratios for me are like relative risks kind of thing. Something is more likely to happen if it equals to something or less likely to happen if its below 2.5.. Or smthng like that

Think of PPV as prelude to likelihood ration. PPV will tell you what is the actual chance of a person having the disease "x".

Likelihood Ratios show how much knowing the test result will improve on a diagnostic guess based simply on pre-test probability: how much do the odds of having the disease increase following a positive test?

Hope this helps!

It wont work for step3. People get barely passing scores cause they focus too much on CcS and skip biostats. Im focusing on biostats. And mtb i.e MCQs i plan to even go and do step2 ck drugadd abstract that was in free150 cause i remeber it helped me a lot on exam and i always do step1 fa stats never done ck stats and i think we should focus on basics they dont need lot of stuff but for me its everytime hard to valvulate rr, ARP attributable risk etc.. I mix em up so just focus on being good on them and how to interpret confidence interval RR and statistical significcance woth p value there are usually same things that y need to understand each drug add and of cours ei answer qs by exclusion and never jump reading anything yet. Mostly y get the answer from some graph on drug add no need to even read anything and subsequent second question is. Ery pften just basic stats not even needing to read drug ad itself

a) Vacuum assisted delivery
b) Cs
SO i am giving more qualified answer on this question now
As cervic is fully dilated we are in the second stage of labor Descent-
this is a second stage arrest defined as failure to deliver within 2 hours (primipara) + give one more additional hour if epidural.
Cause are 3 Ps passenger problems, pelvis or inadequate or extra uterine power.
what we do:
if fetal head is not engaged (above its at stage ZERO meaning not engaged, correct me if im wrong)---> you do emergency CS
if fetal head is engaged--> trial of vacuum or forceps delivery

Yea that's what my confusion was.. If vertex is at 0 station doesn't that mean the fetus head or presenting part is engaged.. I chose forceps as answer that's y..
I guess they want to emphasize that adequate n correct technique was used n still nothing happened I. E y they went to cs.
