Yes you can apply now after you have met all the requirements for ECFMG certification. The ECFMG certificate number is the same as your USMLE ID number.

Good luck!

thx for swift reply
so does it mean i should not wait for certificate to arrive and apply 2day by using my ECFMG ID no as my ECFMG certificate no. so does applying online 2day mean that i have applied before the time limit of 2 sep or is that time limit considered to be applied when my documents reach at FSMB physically including my certificate of identity
thx. hope my questions are not too much botheration

Oops I am not sure about the deadline - whether its for online application or also includes receipt of your document by them. Sorry

But yes your ECFMG certificate no. is the same as your USMLE ID.

Default Documents have until September 9, 2011

Here's the official FSMB announcement

Deadline Dates for the 2011 USMLE Step 3 Applications and Supporting Documents
All applications for the USMLE Step 3 - 2011 application cycle must be received by September 2, 2011 at 5 pm Central Time. All supporting documents (i.e., Certification of Identity forms, post graduate training forms and board approvals from AL, ID, IL, KS, LA, MI, MS, NY) must be received not later than September 9, 2011 at 5 pm central time. Applicants for DC, MO and WI should immediately contact the state board to know that status of their Step 3 application.

Ref: http://www.fsmb.org/m_usmlestep3.html

----

On a separate note.
Do they ask you about the date of issue of your ECFMG certificate in the online Step 3 application?
If they ask, then I guess you should wait until you get the physical certificate to know which date it was issued

My date of issue was the next day after my last result came out (result on 27th July, certificate issued on date 28th July). I can't remember what I was asked to fill on the web application. I got the ECFMG certificate within a week of my result (FedEx within US).

I believe you can know the issue date through OASIS.

Yes. That's true, but not immediately after you pass the tests.
It will appear in OASIS 2-3 days before you get the certificate in the mail.

Yea. I will just keep checking OASIS, that is still better than waiting for that letter to fly over a number of oceans and continents

Quote from the official website:

Quote:
Can I apply before medical school graduation or issuance of my ECFMG certificate or Fifth Pathway certificate? No. As part of the USMLE requirements to take the Step 3, you should apply only after the date of graduation on your medical school diploma or the issue date of your ECFMG or Fifth Pathway certificate. (Recent medical school graduates can take up to six weeks to verify degrees before approval for Step 3).
If you submit a Step 3 application prior to graduation from medical school or issuance of the ECFMG or Fifth Pathway certificate your application will be cancelled and a portion of your fees forfeited.
So if we waited how can we catch up with that very near deadline on Sep 2? Not to mention that I'll still have to go to the nearest embassy to get the certification of identity signed (I live outside of US).

You guys are taking it easy, but I think we're in trouble here. I feel we're going to be late for applying, esp. those of us outside the US.

Most states allow 7 years from the PASSING of the first exam taken. That means if you take and pass a step on October 1, 2011 that you have until October 1, 2018 to complete all exams.

If not, then you have to repeat the first exam that you cleared whether it was step 1 or 2. Whichever you passed first.

Some states allow 10 years if you were in a MD/PHD or MD/MPH program though.

Your plan ends up being a total of around 2-4 years so you are within the time frame. No problems
