Listening Good step 3 score

wat is considered a good step 3 score if one has 99 in the other 2 steps so as to not affect the application adversely.

Default To take or not to take, that is the question :)

Hello Divumalhotra

Honestly I would recommend you not take Step 3 at this time, because in the event that you were to fail, this would reflect negatively on your application more than if you were to pass it. Secondly, Program Directors do not focus as much on the score of step 3, rather on if you passed or failed it on the initial attempt. Lastly I would like to pose this question, do you believe an instructor would expect you to be capable to pass an examination of a Level 3 course if you are only at the Level 2 of that curriculum?

Just a thought....I hope this answers your question.

But many people do take the exam before beginning their residencies and they score very high, like 99!!

Hi. I also got a 99 and 99 in STeps 1 and 2 so I figured, I can take Step 3. I did not spend too much time on books. I mainly used uworld. My last experience in the general clinics was in 1990. I have been in psych the past 15 years. Still, I got a 93 and I am glad I took the risk. I am realizing that in Psych, having Step 3 in the bag may be a real plus factor.

Hello Haisook,

Sorry for the extremely delayed response. It is not impossible to pass Step 3 with a high score prior to beginning residency, but attempting the Step 3 can be very high risk and low yield. According to Selection Criteria for Residency published in the Journal of Academic Medicine, Step 3 was not even listed within the top 14 factors considered when selecting a residency applicant across the 20 specialties considered in the survey. Meanwhile, 2 out of the 3 top-ranked selecting factors pertained to hands-on clinical experience, which is an activity that is very low risk, and apparently high-yield. In addition, I have encountered a number of applicants with triple 99s on their USMLEs who have been unsuccessful at obtaining residency, so it is safe to say that high USMLE scores, alone, are not a guarantee for obtaining a residency position.

Sincerely,
Emerald
