Default fat1iscool's step 3 experience

Hi,

I write this thread so as to help future test takers (I hope it will be helpful) and also as a farewell to the USMLE exams plaguing my life for the last 2 years

A little about me:I am a recent graduate (2014) and I decided to give step 3 in hopes of it being able to help me match this year with an H1 visa.

Materials I used:
MTB 2
MTB 3
UW Qbank and CCS

How I studied:I prepared for a total of 3 months. My strategy was just to read MTBs as many times as I could and supplement that knowledge along with UW. I used MTB 2 for internal medicine and MTB 3 for the rest. I also bought FA for step 3 just for the CCS cases but I only went through them once and did not find it useful or interesting. This is why I did not mention it above.

How the exam went: I found day 1 to be much easier than day 2. I always found biostatistics the most difficult part in the exam but these were easier than UW. The question stems were longer so I took longer on each block in the actual exam than I would when solving a UW block. I still had plenty of time left before a block ended but I just wanted to emphasize that time management can become an issue. I had no audios thankfully and I felt like I was solving an internal medicine exam with a few random questions from the other subjects. One thing I did notice was that the EKGs were very small and difficult to read. Xrays were fine. As always, there were some questions in which I was stuck between 2 answers but that is unfortunately nothing new. I took a break after every 2 blocks and had an Advil in each break to prevent against computer screen staring induced headaches (I get those a lot).
Day 2 was the hard day for me. Time was not an issue here but I was stuck between 2 answers on almost every question here, which was both annoying and frustrating. I had the feeling that maybe somebody with hospital experience (like a resident or intern) would not be stuck in my position, but that is just my opinion. There were plenty of images, some which I could identify, some which I couldn't, again tiny EKGs and one audio question. This time the questions were more evenly distributed to include all subjects. I was dissatisfied with my performance in ACM. I had 13 CCS cases which I felt I should be able to handle because I had gone through the UW cases thrice, and once through the UW handout cases. What I found strange was that complicated cases were for only 11 minutes and simple ones for 21 minutes. Also, my cases ended REALLY quickly. Mostly even before I had the results back from labs or consults. Or before the scheduled surgery or procedure was performed. I have no idea if that is good or bad. So this made it a little difficult for me to come up with a diagnosis without most of the lab results in hand, but I made do. Again, I was dissatisfied with my performance here.

UW percentage: 60% (first time)
UW percentage: 69% (marked and wrong questions only)
FRED: 69%
UWSA: 213 (one day before the exam)

I found UWSA pretty difficult. I hope I score more (A LOT more) in the actual exam than I did on UWSA iA.

Lots of prayers please!!

Good luck to everybody attempting this beast of an exam!

May we all score awesomely

asking because I am only using MTB3.because did CK long time ago.

Hi,

I found MTBs and UW helpful. Didn't really use anything apart from that. I used MTB 2 for IM and MTB 3 for the rest even for CK prep, and this is what I was comfortable with. Personally, I feel MTB 2 is a little better in internal medicine in terms of explanation and presentation but that is just my opinion.
