Default Step 3 Exam Experience:

Hi All

Study source UW, Archer videos and CCS
Duration 3 months
UWSA 207 2 days before exam
NBME 3 380 3 weeks before exam
Real exam 212

Honestly, i felt this exam to be quite tough compared to other steps.
I would be happy to help anyone preparing for this tough exam.

Glad to have completed USMLEs.

Congratulations!!

Hoping to get done with this exam too.
Did you feel UW was enough for biostats. Was uw bank in general helpful for MCQ's? was there a lot of basic science questions?

In hindsight, would you have added anything else to study resource

Thanks

Yes,U world is enough for biostats. But you have to really understand well every question and its explanation.
The drug ads and the abstracts are easy but timing is a big issue. You have to be very fast.
Uw is helpful for MCQS . Definitely is!!
Basic science questions are 2- 3 in a block. Just topics to be brushed are: dermatome patterns, neurology - spinal cord pathways.

I dont think any other resource would have helped me. If your medical knowledge is strong it is a bonus.

Good luck

ccs is the easiest part, but can get tricky.

U world and archer ccs should be more than enough.
Practice on ccs software on usmle .org.
prepare a flow chart on all imp cases and revise a day before exam.

Take a break after every 2 cases.
Read the labs very carefully.
Some minute things can change the entire diagnosis.
8 min cases be very fast.
be prepared to get some unusual cases, 1 0r 2 All others - U WORLD.

Loving Archer Videos. CCS looks so simple and feel more confident now, love the way he explained. Now I am practicing on uw and usmle.org softwares. Any more suggestions? thank you

Observership and clerkship are certainly a plus in your CV. But scores come first. In observership you dont have hands on experience, whereas in clerkship you have but could be done before graduating.

I cannot comment on the exact cases i got. By unusual i mean there may be a hidden comorbidity. For eg a patient with diabetes you are attempting to treat just his sugars but missed RBC positive in urine analysis. The diagnosis could be bladder/renal cell ca with underlying diabetes.

So be VIGILANT about labs

Yes,Archer changed my whole outlook towards step 3. It certainly helped to be more confident with ccs.U world is more than enough. The major drawback of archer ccs is it is very lengthy and kind of random Most of the cases are repeated in each sections. But he explains it very well.

If you could afford archer theory videos it is definitely worth it.It consolidates your knowledge. Kudos to Dr Red for teaching excellently. We need such good teachers.

Good luck

Step 3 prep should take you 2-3 months, less if you're not doing anything else e.g. observerships, externships, etc. The main resources you will need are MTB 2 + UWorld notes from Step 2 CK, UWorld Q bank and CCS for Step 3, and Archer videos. This is the sequence I followed:
  • UWorld Q bank, referencing MTB 2 and UWorld CK notes as needed. ~5 weeks
  • NBME 4 - scored 480 (mean=500, SD=100)
  • Archer videos. ~2 days
  • UWorld CCS cases. ~5 days
  • Second round of UWorld Q bank. ~3 weeks
  • Second round of UWorld CCS. ~3 days
  • Exam is in 3 days. I'm giving it on consecutive days because I don't want to break my rhythm, and I know I won't get any meaningful studying done during the break. Some people however take as many as 10 days between Day 1 and 2. Do whatever fits your personality/study habits.

I didn't use the UWorld biostatistics review, so I can't comment on its usefulness. Though I have heard from people who struggled with biostats that it helped them, so if biostats is not your strong suit, go for it - it's $25 for a 90 day subscription.

You can get the Archer videos from here. The "Archer Full Length CCS Workshops" is the best value at $88. At the very least watch the strategies video - that will help get you oriented with the CCS and give you an outline for how to tackle each case. The rest of the videos are of him going through different cases. Do as many as you feel are necessary.

A good adjunct for CCS is First Aid for Step 3. It has a bunch of CCS mini cases at the end that are pretty useful. You can download it here.

Random thoughts/tips:
  • The CCS can make or break you - make sure you are comfortable with the software, and know how to manage cases properly.
  • People will tell you that "the score doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is that you pass." While this may be true to some extent, keep this thought out of your mind. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by scoring well, and telling yourself that it's okay to perform poorly is only going to hurt you.
  • Relax. After everything you've been through on this journey, Step 3 is a cakewalk.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply.

My 2 cents:I feel bio statistics in u world is more than enough. Understand every question very well.

Also in stress on the fact that there is very little time on day 1. So be very quick to guess on the drug ads and abstracts. Make it a habit to scan the drug abstract/ad very fast.

Have a brief 2 page paper with all the biostats formulas and revise everyday.

Good luck

Hey guys,
How did you exactly use UWORLD?

Did you do ACM and FIP separately, as they will be tested on diff days?

You should do u world atleast 4 times.

First round Random, second round subjectwise and so on.

Be sure all are timed and finish each block with atleast 20 min left.

I did not prepare ACM and FIP separately. I did both for diff days except that i did not do biostats on second day.

Again,it is important to do both for each day.
