Default Step 3 Exam Experience

I undertook my Step 3 before Christmas, with my exam days 5 days apart.

Day 1: Day 1 has lengthy questions ranging from simple to complicated cases. All blocks had long questions (like 10-15 lines) studded with irrelevant info/lab values, not needed to arrive at a diagnosis or choose an appropriate treatment.

I had a plethora of questions from biostats & epidemio. One should know the 2x2 table and formulas on their fingertips. Drug ads & abstracts killed time. I struggled with managing time, in fact in 3 blocks, I blindly ticked 1-2 question(s). The questions are long, practice to enhance your capability to quickly read and comprehend given info & data.

There were few questions from basic sciences, like MOAs of ABx, adverse effects etc. If you have time, skimming through FA isnít a bad idea, esp Step 1 Pharmacology

Day 2: Day 2 is longer, but better than Day 1. The questions are much shorter, making time manageable. I attribute this relieve to the absence of biostats/epidemio/drug ads/abstracts. Most questions are aimed at treatments, sequentially steps in management, screening of diseases, polypharmacy & management of patients with multiple co-morb esp. in the office setting. I noticed an emphasis on preventive medicine.

CCS: The cases were straightforward. Most of my cases ended in 8-10 mins (even the ones that were allocated 20 mins). As soon as I started management, the patient would get better & the case ended. In the UWorld CCS software, you can order routine & stat labs, however, in the real exam, you only have the option of stat labs, even in office.

In a nut shell, Step 3 can be challenging but with the right preparation, the exam can be aced. All the best to all preparing for this last step in the USMLE journey.
The journey is more important than the destination.

I think lots of people feel this way, not so much the knowledge, but also time management. Do you care to elaborate more about Day 1?
