Question How much will Step 3 help when I reapply?

Hey guys I apologize if this question has been already posted...so I didnt make the 2012 match. I have an 80/81 first attempt and CS pass 1st attempt US IMG. I had 3 interviews for FM and 1 SOAP intrvw for FM and still couldn't land anything. Anyways, I definitely plan on taking Step 3 and I was wondering if anyone out there had any insight how much this would boost my application for next year. Also, since I essentially have only 6 months between now and September what else would do you guys suggest for me? Thank you.

I am really sorry to know that you didnt match , but do not let this hamper your efforts , keep on trying , there are multiple things you can do to strengthen your application.
1. You can get some Hands on US clinical Experience ( like externship )
2. You can do clinical research
3. Doing step 3 will definitely Improve your chances but only if you pass it with a good score , on the other hand failing step 3 will further decrease your chances if you get low score.

my scores are 180 n 198, and CS, all no attempts. Looking for externship. Any advices will be appreciate. Besides, my yog is 2000. Should i take step 3 to enhance my application?

well to be honest you have your scores and your YOG as a disadvantage but not to worry , the idea is to work for that which is yet to come which is your step 3 and externships/observerships.

step 3 sounds like a good idea but you will have to work hard and score well .
link for externships is http://www.usmletomd.com/usce/2006/12/florida-fl.html ,
on the right hand of the screen you will see the list of states as preference too .

remember contacts go a long way in securing a residency too . so if you get an observership , make sure you make a good impression and get some good LOR's

all the best .

Yes,I need to work hard on this...Not sure how can I get more than 95 on step 3....! It seems like very difficult job. I wish I could do better in my step 1 and 2.
Those externship link you sent me is very helpful. Thanks a lot!

Good luck,

i am planning to take step 3 before applications and wanted to know what a good score for step 3 is!! Just passing doesnt make sense to me, but i cant give as much time as i gave to previous steps so i wanted to know whats actually "not a bad score" for step 3 in 3 digits is?
i l really appreciate ur reply!!

hi,am in same situation like you(paseed step 1,2,cs)am a IMG but us citizen, was nt eligible for a match and no offer in scramble.didnt hv any lor or us exp.so far what i have found is(talking to couple of friends doing residensy)that LOR are must(externship, observership, pvt clinic),even step3 without LOR wont take u anywhere.according to my frnds if u dont find anything then and only then go for step3(low score and fail will absolutely kill ur chance).u r a citizen here so what a program is going to demand from u is experience and nt step3 which is given by ppl sitting in diff countries(who need visa)for them it might be a excuse that since they r nt in us so they did step3.try pvt doctors in ur area,if no luck then go for paid one.

Okay, great thx. It appears that observerships/externships are a must. Noone seems to put too much emphasis on research it looks like. I will also explore the route of private doctors as I feel this is will be a more accessible option. Definitely a frustrating experience.
