Default Step 3 experience March 2016

Hey guys,

I did the first day today. I gonna write about my second day tomorrow.
I used MTB 3 AND UWORLD
UWSA 233
So here it it's

Day 1:
After reading all the experience on this forum I was expecting from first day more scarier experience.
So biostatistics... There is but nothing out of extraordinary. NNT, RR, OR, Sen, Spec....nothing really more then that.
I had only 2 abstract and maybe 3 drug adds.
So my advise...just review simple step 1 biostatistics.
Basic science: I did in fact had quiet a few questions. 2 anatomy questions. Some drugs mech of action. I didn't not think there is really a way to review all of it....unless u want to reread FA again. Most of questions you would most like still able to answer.

Regarding long stems and no time: I really didn't have a problem in that. I actually had on avarage 15 min maybe more on each block left.
So my usual strategy for long q's is to read the last sentence first.

DAY 2:
For me it seemed much h harder. Question are shorter but more confusing!
Most of questions are on what's the best management or treatment. NO biostatistics!!!
CCS cases are OK...I did not do good on 2 cases. In one case I gave usless invasive procedure.
But what I did for everyone who goes in ER: IVA ,NSS, CXR, OXY, CARDIO BP MONITOR,CBC,BMP,UA!!!
I did UWORLD cases twice and read some of fishers ccs book.

Overall impression is that Day one is very similarly, I would even say the same, as CK. Some easy questions, some hard, some confusing......basically the usual USMLE!!!

Thanks for posting your experience. Did you take any assessments like NBME or UWSA?

Correct Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your post! After being unmatched and unsoaped finally today I have put the main goal - tackle the last USMLE Step 3 in 3-4 months, can you please tell me how long in full-time study you can finish it:

1) if you did UW - how many questions?
2) Kaplan Q bank again how many questions in the bank?
3) What is the good source of the CSS part?

Thanks much and congratulations on getting matched and starting Residency soon!

I tried Kaplan q bank but itspretty usless so I stopped after 400 something questions
For the CCS I did UWORLD and I did Archers workshop

And how many ques in UW. I am asking as I am confused about duration to buy UW.
Thank you and congratulation on Matching.

1) basically UWORLD is more than enough. Besides couple of abstracts...biostatistics is very basic
2) 64% first round..and over 90 second
3) yes it is....well out of other banks like kaplan....uworld is most relevant. You will have WTF questions...it's a given.... It's a long exam and no bank will cover all material. So it also depends on your starting knowledge

Thanks for your answers!

Have you used Kaplan Lecture Notes?
What was your study materials except UW and Archier CSS ?

And how long it takes the exam results will be reported - the same as Step 1 and CK - each Wednesday and 3-4 weeks

Hi. Thanks for your feedback on this exam. What about Archer beside their CCS part? Do you have an opinion on it? I'm planning to do their CCS workshop, and Uworld, plus MTB 3. What about First Aid for step 3? I plan to look at it in parallel from MTB since I got the last edition, but MTB seems more concise a little bit....
Thanks for your input!

Well yes and no. I did read it,,,,we'll I mainly forced my self to read it. Because I used MTB 3 for CK I kinda knew whats in the book.
I read most of the chapters just to review things that I forgotten and those that were not much mentioned in UW

Smile usmle 3 advice

It seems that those who find the Step 3 easy are those who have a great foundation.

For those who are mediocre test takers, would you recommend doing Step 2 CK Qbank for Uworld? And then do Step 3?

Personally, I have time , I will be taking it in August but I want to score well-I just want to hear your thoughts...

while it is generally safe to say that the more questions you do, then the better you will perform... step 3 is a little different because of the ccs. i did really well on the mcqs, but bombed the ccs and that brought my score down to the 230s. so although you could benefit from adding the uworld step 2ck qbank, you shouldnt forget to prepare well for the ccs.

Could you tell me more about your ccs experience.
I have a filling that I screwed up definitely in 3 cases. I didn't kill anyone but one case I gave usless invasive procedure, but in the end I got it right. And other 2 cases I was just not sure what's going on.

Did you feel that some mcq special on the second day were harder. With for 50/50 q

Thz

i think i messed up most of the ccs cases... with only few did i actually feel like i handled it in a satisfactory manner. i cant remember having trouble figuring out what the diagnosis was or the main investigations/treatments... but i was horrible with the whole timing and scheduling of follow-up appointments.

the mcqs on the second day had more step 1 material, which was very unusual. the blocks were also a bit shorter. harder though? perhaps a bit.
