Question Must i take step 3 to get an H1 or J1 visa?!!

I finished step 1 and 2 ck and expecting the score of the latter on wednesday. I'm wondering if i have enough time to take CS by Dec 31 as a deadline, do an observership and take step 3 to participate in 2013 match?
i got 99/249 in step 1 and hoping for a similar score on step 2 CK, with such a profile, what are the chances that i don't get matched?? and what specialties do you advise me to apply for?? I want general surgery, hard to match at it with my CV??

It's much much better if you take the CS before the application for the 2013 match (September 2012). Your chances are very low if you sent applications without having the CS result, and consequently ECFMG certification. You also have to apply in the FIRST day (1st of Sept 2012) to increase your chances. My advice to you is go to the US and take the CS at least, if you can get an observership or clerkship it's better (+LORs). You have to take step 3 before the ranking (February 2013) to get a H-1 visa. J-1 visa only requires a ECFMG certification.

Nobody can guarantee you anything with any score! It's impossible. As for surgery, I remember I read that 25% of IMG applicants get match, as opposed to 40% in the match season collectively. You have to decide which specialty you want to apply to. But in anycase, you have to sell yourself in the application (e.g observerships, personal statement..) and the interview that this specialty is your first and only choice.

Default Thanx

Thanks, Dr. Seddik. Once you are ECFMG-certified, you get a J-1 visa?

You're Welcome..
It's not like that! You'll need another papers, but you can get all the papers if you are ECFMG certified. For e.g you need a "statement of need" from your country, but that's easy to get. They also need you to sign a contract with a residency program, you obviously have to do that if you match.

Go to universities or hospitals websites. Search for staff doctors that might help you (you can know that from their names!). Google them, you'll find their office number at least. This is one way, I don't know how effective it is, but it worked for me.

That's a better way of course
But most of the time the program director's address is the address for the co ordinator, that's why I subconciously eliminated it.
Most of the time you don't need to talk to program directors, they have a lot to worry about. You can find info from the Uni website, if you have questions you can contact the program co ordinator
