Default Bring Passion to your Personal Statement

Writing a personal statement is a complex and dynamic process. In essence you are creating a work of art. Your job is to tell a story that inspires the reader to take action. Ask yourself: what was the moment when I truly knew that I wanted to pursue medicine? My wife is an IMG from Colombia now practicing as a Hospitalist in Naples, Florida. Every day she comes home exhausted, stressed, and (at times) overwhelmed. Despite this she wakes up every morning with a renewed spirit and hunger to take on the day’s challenges. She views medicine as a puzzle with each patient requiring a slightly different combination of pieces to reach a solution. The challenge in finding those pieces is what drives her.

You have to identify and nurture what drives you. This is what you must write about in your personal statement. Stating you “want to help people” or “provide greater access to medical care” is nice, but WHY do you want to do these things? Distinguish yourself by speaking to your true passion for medicine. We began IMG Angel mainly as a labor of love back in 2010. My wife did not match during her first attempt. The second year I reviewed all of her documents and realized that she needed help telling her story. The same held true during interviews. She pre-matched to an IM program her second time around in large part because she spoke to her passion for the field. Since then I have helped dozens of applicants match by identifying and speaking to their true passion.

Life’s daily challenges and worries have a tendency to distract us from our long-term goals. What every applicant out there is trying to accomplish is special. You are truly the next generation that will save and improve lives around the world. Reignite the passion that lies deep within you. Feed it with constant acknowledgement knowing that despite life's obstacles you are moving in the direction of your goals. My passion is helping people achieve their dreams. Often this means helping incredibly gifted people from challenging situations tell their story in a way that brings their struggle and their motivation to light. Appreciate the moment and embrace every opportunity to take advantage of what is in front of you. Good luck to all who are applying.
